The story · English
Long ago, there lived a king named Bāna, the eldest son of Bali. He was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, a man of truth and strict vows, and through that devotion he ruled over the beautiful city of Shonitpura. Bāna was so favored by Shiva that the gods themselves served him like attendants, and with his thousand arms Bāna himself played music to please the Lord during His divine dance. Shiva offered him a boon, and Bāna chose Him as the guardian of his city. One day, filled with a restless pride in his own strength, Bāna approached Lord Shiva. He touched the Lord's lotus feet with his crown and spoke, 'O Mahadeva, Guru of the world, these thousand arms you gave me have become a burden. Apart from you, there is no one in the three worlds who can challenge me in battle. With my arms itching for a fight, I went against the elephants of the quarters, crushing mountains on the way, and even they fled in fear.'
Lord Shiva was angered by this arrogance. 'You fool,' Shiva replied, 'when your banner breaks, you will meet in battle one equal to me, and that battle will crush your pride.' Pleased by the prospect of a great war, Bāna returned home to await the destiny Shiva had set in motion. Meanwhile, Bāna had a daughter named Usha. One night, Usha had a vivid dream of a beautiful youth. Though she had never seen him before, she woke up longing for him. Surrounded by her friends, she became distressed and restless. Among them was Chitralekha, the daughter of Bāna's minister Kumbhanda. Seeing Usha's plight, Chitralekha asked, 'Who is this man you seek? Which prince has captured your heart?'
Usha described the youth from her dream: he was dark-skinned with eyes like lotuses, wearing yellow garments, and possessing long, powerful arms. 'I seek this beloved one,' Usha cried, 'but I do not know where he is.' Chitralekha, skilled in the mystic arts, promised to bring this man to her. She painted portraits of the most powerful beings in the universe—gods, gandharvas, siddhas, and demons—to see if any matched the description. When she reached the humans, she painted Shura, Anakadundubhi (Vasudeva), Balarama and Krishna of the Vrishnis. Then she painted Pradyumna, and at the sight of him Usha grew bashful. Finally, when she painted Aniruddha, the grandson of Krishna, Usha smiled and whispered, 'Yes, it is he.'
Chitralekha flew through the sky to the city of Dwarka, which Krishna protected, and used her yogic powers to spirit Aniruddha away from his bed. She brought him to Shonitpura and presented him to Usha. The two fell deeply in love, and Aniruddha remained hidden in the girls' palace. Usha cared for him with incense, lamps, and fine foods, and for a long time, he remained there, blinded by his love for her. However, the secret eventually leaked. Guards noticed the daughter of the king was behaving strangely and reported it to Bāna. The king, distressed by the news of his daughter's dishonor, rushed to the girls' quarters. There, he found a youth of unmatched beauty, dark-skinned and wearing yellow silk.
Bāna was astonished to see Aniruddha seated before Usha, playing dice with her and wearing a jasmine garland marked with her kunkuma. Furious, Bāna ordered his army to seize the intruder. Aniruddha, acting like the god of death, took up an iron club and crushed the soldiers, who fled the palace with broken heads, thighs and arms. But Bāna was not finished. He used a magical serpent-noose to bind the prince. When Usha heard that her beloved had been bound, she was overcome with grief and wept, her eyes full of tears. This event set the stage for a terrifying conflict between the forces of the Yadu dynasty and the devotee of Shiva.
