Knowing the Friend, Finding Peace
Bhagavad Gita 5.29
Meaning · English
Having realized me as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all the worlds, and the selfless Friend of all living beings, a person attains peace.
Krishna names three things to realize about him, and peace follows from them. First, bhoktar, the enjoyer, from the root bhuj, to receive or partake. Every offering and every hard discipline, he says, reaches him as its receiver. Second, maheshvara, the great Lord of all worlds, so nothing falls outside his care or rule. Third, suhrid, a friend, literally a good heart: one who wants good for others and asks nothing back. He is this for all living beings, not for a chosen few. Then jnatva, having realized, which means knowing that has settled in, not just heard. Shanti, the peace that results, is a quiet that does not depend on how things turn out. The reason is the unrest of the one who works. Arjuna, like anyone, labours as if every result were his burden and every effort his own loss or gain. Krishna removes that weight by showing who receives the work and who stands behind it. The listener is asked to see effort as offered, not owed. Shankara reads the peace as release from the cycle of rebirth, won by knowing the Lord as the one all rites serve. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord is the real enjoyer of everything and that knowing him with devotion brings peace. Madhva stresses the Lord's complete supremacy over every soul, and says knowing it brings liberation.
A postman trudges through rain with a heavy bag, anxious about every parcel. Then he learns they all come from one generous friend, sent to everyone on the street, and that the friend watches the whole route. The bag weighs the same, but the walk changes. The parcels are the offerings and austerities, the friend is the Lord.
1. Tonight, pick one task you did today that nobody thanked you for: dishes, a call, a late errand. 2. Before sleep, spend one minute saying silently, "This was offered." Name whom you think it reached, in whatever way feels honest. 3. Notice, for the next ten minutes, whether the leftover irritation about it stays the same or loosens. 4. Do the same with one task tomorrow morning, before you start it, and notice how the beginning feels.
A schoolteacher stays two hours after the bell to tutor three children whose parents never come to say thank you. Walking home she counts what the effort cost her and what it returned, and the sum comes out short. Krishna's words change that count step by step. First she asks who receives this work. In his teaching, the receiver is the Lord, who partakes of every offering and austerity, so the work is not lost because nobody applauded. Next she asks who stands behind it, and he says a friend of all beings, which makes the burden shared and not hers alone. Then the ledger loosens, because the effort was offered, not lent out for repayment. Ordinary experience confirms one thing here: resentment tends to grow when effort goes unseen and a reward is silently expected. The verse does not promise that the children will pass, that her tiredness will lift, or that her grief or money worries will vanish. It is also no substitute for rest, or for a doctor when exhaustion turns into something heavier. What it offers is a different answer to the question of where her work goes.
