Renouncing Without Leaving Work

Bhagavad Gita 6.1

Meaning · English

The Supreme Lord said: One who does the work that is owed, not desiring its results, is both renounced and a yogi. He is not the one who is without fire, nor the one who is without activity.

Krishna opens by redefining two words. Sannyasi comes from a root sense of laying something down. Yogi comes from yoking, joining. People expected the sannyasi to be the one who lays down work. Krishna says what is laid down is the desire for karma-phala, the fruit of action. Karma is the act itself, and phala is what ripens from it, such as praise, profit or outcome. He also names the work: kārya, what is owed, what ought to be done. It is the duty at hand, not whatever appeals. The last clause answers two familiar figures. One is the person without fire, who has stopped tending the sacred fire of ritual. The other is the person without activity, who has simply stopped. Krishna says neither is renounced or a yogi for that reason alone. He says this to Arjuna, who wants to drop his duty and walk away from the battle, as if stepping back were the higher path. The ask is narrow: keep doing what is yours to do, and let go of the grip on what it returns. Shankara reads the fire-and-inaction clause as warning against giving up rites and duties without knowledge. Ramanuja takes the described worker as already a yogi, because this action steadies the mind toward the self. Madhva reads the work as done for the Lord's sake, not for its fruit.

Someone sweeps the doorstep every morning. Nobody thanks them and nobody checks. The step needs sweeping, so it is swept, and then they go in. They have not walked away from the house, and they are not waiting for a reward. That is work done without a claim on its fruit.

1. Pick one small task that is plainly yours today: dishes, an email owed, a call to a relative. 2. Before you start, tell yourself in one line what you are not asking of it: thanks, a reply, a good result. 3. Do it start to finish, with your attention on the doing. 4. Afterward, notice for a minute whether you reached for the outcome. If you did, just notice. Do not scold yourself.

A farmer stands at the edge of his field the evening before the sowing. The forecast is uncertain, the loan is due, and he has no idea whether the rain will come. He could stay at home worrying, or he could go out and sow late into the night, thinking only of the monsoon. Krishna's words point to a third way. Sowing is the work owed to this season, so he sows, row by row, with his attention on seed and soil and not on the harvest. The rain stays outside his control, but the row in front of him does not. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind busy checking the result has little left for the task itself. The teaching does not promise that the crop will grow, that the debt will be paid, or that fear will vanish. It does not replace rest, advice from neighbours, or help from a doctor if worry has turned into illness. It only says that what is owed can be done fully even while the outcome stays unknown.
