Two Stages, Two Tools

Bhagavad Gita 6.3

Meaning · English

For the beginner who wishes to climb to Yog, working without attachment is said to be the means. For the one who has already climbed to Yog, stillness in meditation is said to be the means.

Krishna gives Arjuna a ladder with two rungs, and a different tool for each. Three words carry it. Arurukshu means one who wants to climb, a beginner still at the foot. Yoga is union, the steadiness of a mind joined to what is real. Karma is action, here work done without clinging to its result. Sama is calm, a quieting of the mind. The plain sense: a person who is still climbing is helped by work, because acting without grasping at outcomes loosens the mind's habits one by one. A person who has arrived is helped by calm, because nothing is left to wear away and what remains is to rest in that steadiness. The reason is the problem Arjuna carries. He is a doer facing a duty, and he is tempted to think that peace means walking away from action. Krishna answers that for a beginner the road to peace runs through action. The verse also asks the listener to know their own stage honestly and to use the tool that fits it, rather than borrowing the practice of someone further along. On the commentators: Shankara reads the beginner's work as purifying the mind, preparing it for knowledge. Ramanuja reads both stages as parts of one steady devotion. Madhva reads the calm as the fruit of long, devoted work.

A man learning to swim kicks and paddles hard, and the effort is what keeps him up. Years later he floats on his back in a lake, arms open, and any thrashing would sink him. Work is the paddling of the beginner, and calm is the floating of the one who has learned to hold himself up.

1. Pick one task today that you usually do only for praise or payment, such as washing dishes, a report, or an errand for a neighbour. 2. Do it fully for ten minutes, without checking whether anyone notices. 3. When you catch yourself wanting thanks or a result, name it silently and go back to the work. 4. In the evening, sit quietly for two minutes and notice whether the day left you more settled than a rushed one usually does.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at night, his father asleep in the room behind him, waiting for morning test results. His hands have nothing to do, and his mind runs through every bad outcome. The verse would change that hour in steps. First he turns to something small that is truly his to do: he fills the water jug, straightens the blanket, writes down the questions for the doctor. Each act is done for its own sake, not to bargain with fate. Ordinary experience bears this out: busy hands often quiet a racing mind better than sitting and fretting. Later, once the worst of the agitation has settled, he can sit in the plastic chair and simply breathe, and the stillness comes more easily than it would have an hour earlier. The verse does not promise that the results will be good, that fear will vanish, or that grief will be spared. It does not replace the doctors, whose work is the very thing he is waiting on.
