Wisdom That Doesn't Talk
Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.4
Meaning · English
This is the life-breath present in all beings. Knowing it, one becomes truly wise and stops talking past what he knows. He plays in the Self, is glad in the Self, and still does his work. He is the best of Brahman's knowers.
Angiras gives Saunaka three words to hold. Prana is breath, from the sense of breathing forth. Here it names the living force that shows itself in every being. Ativadin is one who talks beyond: ati means over or past, vadin is a speaker. It describes someone who claims more than he has lived. Kriyavan is kriya, action, plus the sense of having. It describes one who keeps working. The plain sense is this. Angiras says the Self appears as the life in all beings. One who really knows this becomes wise, and the wisdom shows as less argument. He has no need to talk past what he knows. His delight is in the Self, which atman names: what one most inwardly is. Brahman is the vast ground of everything. The knower still acts. His play and gladness are inward, so his work is not driven by hunger for results. Angiras says this because Saunaka asked what is worth knowing, and talk about the Self is easy to mistake for knowing it. Shankara reads prana as the Self of all beings, and he takes the works as disciplines like truthfulness that serve knowledge. Angiras asks the listener to tell a wise person by steadiness and work, not by speeches.
A child on the floor with a pile of blocks builds a tower for an hour. She does not look up to see who is watching, and she works carefully. The joy comes from the building itself. The knower in the verse is like her: busy, absorbed, and glad inwardly, with no audience needed.
1. Pick one conversation today where you feel the pull to win a point or prove you know something. 2. Say only what you actually know from your own experience. Stop when that runs out, even if the silence feels short. 3. Afterward, spend two minutes alone and notice whether you feel lighter or heavier for having said less. 4. Do one ordinary task, such as washing dishes, with full attention and no one told about it.
A man stands at his sister's wedding feast while two cousins argue about whose way of worship is deeper. He has read a good deal, and a clever reply is already forming. Angiras says the wise one is not a talker only, and the scene changes in small steps. He notices the urge to speak is about being seen as right. He asks himself what he has actually lived, not what he has read. He finds that very little, so he says that little, or nothing, and goes to help carry plates. His hands are busy and his mind is quiet. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: people who feel settled in themselves tend to need less argument to feel secure. The teaching is Angiras's own. It says the knower delights in the Self and keeps working. It does not promise that the cousins will stop quarrelling, that the man will never feel the pull to show off again, or that hurt feelings in a family mend because one person stayed quiet.
