Seeing the Golden Maker
Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.3
Meaning · English
When the one who sees beholds the golden-hued maker and master, the Person from whom Brahman itself arises, then that knower shakes off merit and fault alike, stainless, and arrives at the highest sameness.
Angiras answers Saunaka's question about what is worth knowing. Three words carry the verse. Rukmavarna means gold-coloured, shining like gold. Brahman is the vast, limitless reality the Upanishads speak of. Purusha means the Person, what dwells in and fills everything. Samya means sameness, a standing level with, no gap. The text says the seer sees this shining Person as maker and lord, and as the source from which Brahman itself comes. Then the seer is truly wise. Good deeds and bad deeds, merit and fault, are shaken off like dust from a cloth. Stainless, the seer reaches the highest sameness. The reason given is the grief named in the verse before: a person who feels small and tied to deeds keeps suffering. Seeing the Lord removes that. Shankara reads the sameness as oneness with Brahman, with no remaining difference between the knower and what is known. The verse asks the listener for steady, direct seeing, not for more talk about it.
A man walks into a dark room and keeps tripping over furniture. Then someone opens the shutters and the morning sun fills the room. He stops fighting the chairs, because he sees the whole room and where he stands in it. Seeing the golden Person is the sunlight: the seer sees the source and stops stumbling.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit quietly for five minutes and recall one good deed and one wrong you did today. 2. Notice how each one pulls at you: pride for the first, regret for the second. 3. Without arguing with either, breathe out slowly three times and let the day's tally rest. 4. Tomorrow morning, spend one minute looking at the first light in a window, and think only of the source of all that shines.
A woman sits in her car outside her mother's care home after a visit. She replays what she said, the patience she showed, the sharp word she regrets. She keeps score, and the score follows her home. The verse speaks to that moment. The text teaches that a seer who sees the shining Lord in everything stops carrying the ledger of merit and fault. In practice, she would first name the day's good and bad plainly, without inflating or hiding either. Then she would turn from the tally to the larger fact of the mother, the home and the light on the building, and let her attention widen. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on its own record grows tight and tired, and that a wider view loosens it. The verse does not promise that the regret is false, that her mother will recover, or that care for her ends. Real mistakes may still need an apology, and exhaustion or low mood that lingers deserves a doctor's attention.
