The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 6 · Lift Yourself by Yourself

Mind as Friend or Enemy

Bhagavad Gita 6.5

Meaning · English

Let a person lift the self by the mind, and never let the self sink down. For the mind alone is the friend of the self, and the mind alone is the enemy of the self.

Krishna uses one word, atma, three times, and it carries two senses here: the self, the person, and the mind that thinks and chooses. The verse turns on that doubling. Uddharet means to raise up, the way a bucket is drawn from a well. Avasadayet means to make sink down. Bandhu is a friend, a kinsman, someone on your side. Ripu is an enemy. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person is lifted by the mind, and that the same mind can drag the person down. So it is a friend to the self and also its enemy. Nobody else holds that office. The reason follows from the verses before it: Krishna has just said that the one climbing toward yoga must climb by their own effort. Another person can teach and encourage, but cannot do the thinking for you. The text asks the listener to take up that responsibility, and to stop the self sinking. Shankara reads the lifting as rescue from bondage to the world, done by a mind trained in discernment. Ramanuja reads it as the mind turned away from sense-objects and toward the self. Madhva reads it as effort made under God's guidance. All three keep the point that the rescuer and the one rescued are the same person.

Two people set out on a long walk with one companion. On a good day that companion carries the water, keeps the pace and points out the path. On a bad day the same companion sits down at every bend and says turn back. The companion is the mind, and the walker is the self who must live with it.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one thought from today that dragged you down, such as a harsh remark to yourself or a replayed mistake. Write it in a line. 2. Beside it, write one thought from today that steadied you. 3. Tomorrow, when the dragging thought returns, say quietly, "that is the enemy speaking," and then do the next small task in front of you. 4. Keep this for one week and notice which kind of thought comes first when you are tired.

A mother lies awake at two in the morning after snapping at her small son over spilled milk. The scene replays. Her mind begins to say that she is a bad mother and always has been. The verse speaks to that hour. Krishna's teaching is that the voice is not a stranger's. It is her own mind, and it can act as enemy or friend. First she can notice that the sentence is a thought, not a verdict. Then she can ask what a friend would say, which is probably that she was tired, that she was sharp once, and that she can apologise in the morning. Then she can turn to something small, such as water, slower breathing or the plan for the morning. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, and the night makes every thought sound harsher than it is. The limit is plain: the verse does not take away her guilt or the fatigue of raising a child. Persistent low mood or sleeplessness is a matter for a doctor, not for willpower alone.
