Bhagavad Gita 6.6

Meaning · English

For one who has conquered the mind, the mind becomes a friend. But for one whose mind is unconquered, that same mind stays on as an enemy, working against him like a foe.

Three words carry it. Atma is the word for self, and here it points to the mind. Bandhu is a friend, a relative, someone on your side. Jita means conquered, and the opposite is anatma, a mind not yet won over. Krishna tells Arjuna that one mind can play two roles. When it has been trained, it works for the person. When it has not, it works against him, and the person has no one to blame but the mind he carries everywhere. Krishna says this because Arjuna is paralysed by the pull of his own fears and attachments, and no outside enemy can be fought off the way an inner one has to be. So the text asks for conquest, meaning steady training, not for the mind to be thrown away. Once it is trained, the same mind that spoiled your sleep supports your effort. Shankara reads the conquering self as the discerning intellect mastering body and senses. Ramanuja reads a won mind as one turned toward realising the self. Madhva reads the friendly mind as one that leans toward the Lord.

A big dog on a leash. If it is trained, it walks beside you, guards the house and is glad of you. If it is not, it drags you across the road after every squirrel. It is the same animal either way. The mind is that dog, and training decides whose side it takes.

1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes to name one habit of thought that worked against you today, such as a replayed argument or a worry about tomorrow. 2. Tomorrow, when that thought returns, say quietly, "There you are," and go back to what your hands were doing. 3. At the end of the day, note one moment when your mind helped you, such as a clear decision or a patient reply. Keep doing this for a week and see which list grows.

The night before his daughter's wedding, a retired schoolteacher lies awake in a rented hall. His mind keeps replaying a quarrel with his brother from years ago, and he rehearses sharp things he might say tomorrow. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First he sees that the voice is his own mind, not a fact about his brother. Second, he lets the rehearsal run down without feeding it, perhaps by breathing slowly or listing the day's tasks. Third, by morning the same mind is free to do what he wants of it, which is to greet his brother warmly. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind is the hardest to steer, so rest counts as part of the training. The teaching does not promise that the old hurt vanishes, that the brother will answer kindly, or that persistent sleeplessness, low mood or panic need no doctor. A mind that is often overwhelmed deserves proper care as well as practice.
