Steady Through Heat and Insult
Bhagavad Gita 6.7
Meaning · English
For one who has conquered the mind and is at peace, the Supreme is present, steadfast within, in cold and heat, in happiness and distress, and likewise in honor and dishonor.
Three terms carry the verse. Jita-atma means one whose mind is won over: jita is conquered, atma here is the mind. Prashanta means deeply quieted, a calm that has settled and is no longer being held down. Samahita means placed together, steadfast, set firmly in one place. Krishna tells Arjuna that for such a person the Supreme is steadfast within, and the pairs of opposites no longer pull the person off that seat. He names three pairs: cold and heat, which touch the body; happiness and distress, which touch the feelings; honor and dishonor, which touch the person's standing among others. The reason follows from the verses before it. A mind that is a friend gives a steady footing, and an unconquered mind is an enemy that turns every shift of weather or praise into a storm. Krishna asks Arjuna to win that footing first. Shankara reads the Supreme as the person's own inner self, realized once the mind is quiet. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord, who is reached and held steadily in the heart. Madhva also reads it as the Lord, distinct from the person, whom the calm person holds in steady devotion.
A boat tied to a firm post rides the same waves as a loose one, rising and falling with them. The loose boat drifts into the rocks. The post is the Supreme held steady within; the waves are heat, grief and praise.
1. Tonight, pick one small discomfort, such as a cold room or a hot kitchen, and stay with it for two minutes without complaining aloud. 2. Tomorrow, when someone praises or corrects you, pause for one breath before replying. 3. In the evening, write down one moment when mood or opinion pushed you around, and what you noticed in your body then. 4. Sit quietly for five minutes and let that moment pass without judging it.
A man stands at a wedding hall where the caterer has just told him the food will be late, and an uncle remarks loudly that he planned badly. His face is hot, his chest tight, and he wants to answer back. The verse changes the moment in steps. First he notices the heat and the tightness as weather in the body, not as orders. Second, he sees the insult is about standing, the same pair of honor and dishonor Krishna names. Third, he keeps his footing, speaks to the caterer plainly, and leaves the uncle's remark unanswered. The text says this steadiness comes from a conquered mind and a settled inner seat, not from hardness. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, hungry person is thrown about more easily by small slights, so rest and food help the calm that Krishna describes. The verse does not promise that the insult will not sting, or that grief or illness will be lighter; for pain that does not ease, a doctor or counselor is the right person to ask.
