Meaning · English
One who is fully satisfied by knowledge and by realized wisdom, who stands undisturbed with the senses conquered, is called a yogi in constant communion with the Supreme, seeing pebbles, stone and gold alike.
Krishna gives Arjuna a portrait of a person who is already full. Take three words. Jnana is knowledge, what one has learned and understood. Vijnana is knowledge that has become one's own, wisdom from within, tested in living. Kutastha means undisturbed, standing firm while things around it change. Together they describe someone satisfied by what they know and have realized, not by what they can collect. Because that hunger is met, the senses lose their pull. This person has conquered them, which here means they no longer drag the mind about. Krishna calls such a person yukta, one joined in constant communion with the Supreme. Then comes the test: a lump of earth, a stone and a bar of gold look equal to this person. Gold is not worthless to them. It simply has no power to make them restless. Krishna's reason is that craving runs on emptiness. Whoever is satisfied within stops being pushed around by what is outside. Arjuna is asked to want less from things and to look for steadiness in what he has truly understood. Shankara reads jnana as knowledge taken from the teaching and vijnana as that same knowledge seen directly for oneself. Ramanuja takes the yogi's contentment as resting in knowledge of the self. Madhva takes it as resting in knowledge of God.
A heavy iron anvil in a smithy takes blow after blow all day. Sparks fly, hammers ring, hot metal is dropped on it and lifted away, and the anvil stays put. The anvil is the yogi, and the blows are praise, loss, temptation and gold, none of which move it.
1. Pick one small thing you often reach for without needing it, such as your phone, a snack or a shop window. 2. Today, when the pull comes, stop for one full minute and simply watch it rise and fade. 3. Ask yourself plainly: do I need this, or am I only restless? 4. In the evening, spend two minutes writing down one thing you understood well enough to act on. Notice that it steadies you more than the thing you resisted.
A woman stands at a jeweller's counter, choosing a gift for her sister's wedding. The salesman lays out a heavier bangle and says it will be remembered. She feels the tug to spend more than she planned. Krishna's picture would change the moment in steps. First she notices the tug as a tug, not as an order. Then she recalls what she actually knows: her sister cares about her presence more than the weight of the gold. She names her budget and keeps to it. The bangle stays beautiful, but it no longer decides for her. She can look at the gold calmly and leave the shop at ease. Ordinary experience agrees that restraint comes easier when we are rested and fed, and harder when we are tired and anxious. The verse does not promise that she will feel no wish for the finer piece, nor that money worries or family pressure will vanish. It describes a steadiness that grows over years, and nobody should expect to have it fully today.
