Meaning · English

Toward well-wishers, friends, enemies, the neutral, mediators, the envious and relatives, toward the pious and the sinful as well, the one whose understanding is impartial is distinguished.

Krishna lists nine kinds of people: well-wishers, friends, enemies, neutral persons, mediators, the envious, relatives, the pious and the sinners. They run from those who love us to those who harm us, and from the good to the wrongdoers. Three words carry the verse. Buddhi is the faculty that judges and decides, the intellect. Sama means level or equal, so sama-buddhi is a judging mind that does not tilt. Vishishyate means to be set apart, marked out as better. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person with this level regard is the one who stands out. The reason sits in the verses before it. A yogi who stays the same in heat and cold, honour and insult, and who sees a clod and gold alike, has no use for favourites. Likes and dislikes are the tilt, and he has set them down. So Krishna asks Arjuna to look at how his regard moves when a person walks in. Each clause names a different pull: love, hostility, indifference, envy, kinship, virtue and vice. Even virtue and vice are on the list, so the level mind does not stop judging deeds. It stops letting the person's standing bend its regard. Shankara reads this as the mark of the highest among yogis. Ramanuja grounds it in seeing every self as alike in nature. Madhva grounds it in knowing God as the ruler of all beings alike.

A public tap at the edge of a village fills the jar of the shopkeeper, the thief and the stranger with the same water, and it does not ask who they are first. The tap is the level mind, and the water is the regard it gives to whoever comes.

1. Pick one day and, each time you speak to someone, notice the small tilt in your voice or posture, whether warmer or cooler. 2. At the end of the day, write down one person you greeted warmly and one you greeted coolly. Do not judge either. 3. Tomorrow, give the cooler one the same plain courtesy you give a friend: full attention for one minute, same tone, same patience. 4. Notice what you were afraid of giving up by doing it.

A grandmother stands at a family wedding hall handing out plates. A cousin walks in who once took her husband to court over a plot of land. Her hands tighten on the stack. Without the verse, she gives him a plate with a cold face, or she turns away and busies herself with someone dearer. With it, she can see the pull toward dislike as a tilt in her own judgment, and she can let the plate go across with the same hands and the same words she gave the others. She does not have to pretend the dispute never happened. The land and the court are still real. What changes is that the man is handed the same regard as a friend. Ordinary experience says that when we are hurt or worn out, we sort people into camps faster and more harshly, so the level mind is hardest to keep exactly when it is most needed. Krishna does not promise that the old hurt will vanish, or that the cousin will turn kind, or that legal wrongs need no remedy. He describes the mind that has stopped letting the hurt decide how it sees the person.
