Truth Lays the Road

Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.6

Meaning · English

Truth alone wins, never falsehood. Truth spreads out the road, the road the gods travel. Along it the seers, their longings fulfilled, walk to where truth keeps its highest treasure.

Three words carry the verse. Satya comes from sat, what is, so satya is what is real, and speech and life that match it. Aptakama joins apta, obtained, with kama, desire: a person whose wants are met, so that nothing is left pulling at them. Nidhana is a storehouse, a place where something precious is laid down and kept. Angiras tells Saunaka that the real wins and the unreal does not. Truth is what makes the road, the way the gods go, and it is not merely a rule for walking it. The seers who travel it have no hunger left to drive them, and they arrive where truth keeps its highest treasure. Angiras gives his reason in the verses around it: the Self is reached by truthfulness, and a mind full of pretence cannot see it. So the verse answers Saunaka's question about what is worth knowing by saying what must come first. It asks the listener to be honest in speech and in thought, because that is the ground the road is built on. Shankara reads satya as truthfulness free of deceit, a means that prepares the mind for knowing Brahman, the real beyond all things. He reads the highest treasure as Brahman itself.

A road cut across a hillside holds through the monsoon only if it sits on bedrock. One laid on loose fill looks the same in dry weather and slides away in the first heavy rain. Truth is the bedrock here, and the seers' road stays passable because of it.

1. Today, before you speak in any conversation that matters, ask whether what you are about to say matches what you know. 2. Notice one small habit of pretence, such as a polite excuse, an inflated story or a nod you did not mean, and say the plain version instead. 3. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling what you said today. Note which words felt steady and which felt like effort.

A woman at a bank counter counts her change and finds she has been handed a note too many. The queue is long and no one is watching. Nothing in the verse tells her what to feel. Angiras says the real wins and the false does not, and that truth lays the road. So she steps back to the window. She says what happened, hands the note over, and walks out with nothing extra and nothing to remember. The teaching then rests on one plain fact. A falsehood has to be kept track of, while the truth has only to be said again. A person who lives that way carries less, and the verse calls this the beginning of a road. It does not promise that honesty is rewarded on the spot, that the clerk will be grateful, or that grief and want go away. It does not replace advice from a doctor or a lawyer where one is needed. It says that the road the seers walk is laid with truth, one act at a time.
