Enough of wealth, enough of desire, enough even of good deeds. Through all of these, in the wilderness of worldly wandering, the mind found no rest. For how many births have you worked with body, mind and speech? Action gives pain and weariness. Let it stop now.

Ashtavakra names three things people chase: artha, wealth; kama, desire; and sukrta, good deeds. He puts good deeds in the same row as the other two, and that is the surprise. The place they are chased in is samsara-kantara, the forest of samsara, the round of birth and rebirth. Vishranta means rested, and he says the mind has never been vishranta anywhere in that forest. He then asks Janaka to count the births in which he has worked with body, mind and speech: hands, thought and voice. Karma is action, and he calls it duhkha-ayasa-da, giving pain and strain. The last line is an order to stop, uparamyatam. It means to cease and come to rest, not to push harder. The reason comes from the chapter around it. Janaka is already the witness, pure awareness, and nothing gained by effort can add to that. So the effort has only produced weariness. Ashtavakra asks Janaka to see that none of these pursuits, the pious ones included, has ever finished the work of the mind, and to let the doing drop. He does not ask for a better kind of striving.

A child on a park roundabout keeps pushing the ground with one foot to keep it spinning. Each push gives a burst, then the ride needs another. When the foot stays up, the spinning slows and the roundabout stands still. The pushing is action; the stillness was there under it all along.

1. Tonight, take ten minutes after your last task and sit with nothing to finish, no phone, no list. 2. Notice the pull to start something. Name it quietly: wanting, or duty, or habit. 3. Do not follow it for those ten minutes. Watch how it rises and fades. 4. Afterward, ask yourself which of today's tasks truly had to be done, and which only kept you moving.

A woman sits on the edge of her bed on Sunday evening with next week's list in her head: school forms, a bill, a relative's gift, a favour owed to a neighbour. She is tired, yet she cannot sit still. Ashtavakra's words, as the text gives them, begin by counting up. Wealth, desire and good deeds have all been tried, and the mind did not rest in any of them. Seen that way, the list stops being proof that she is behind. It becomes one more round of the same effort. She can put the list down for an hour, see which items were wanted by her and which only by habit, and let the rest wait for morning. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a tired body and mind do not settle just because the work has been done. The verse does not promise that the bill will pay itself, that duties will vanish, or that the worry will lift at once. It does not replace sleep, rest or medical care for someone who is truly exhausted or unwell.
