Meaning · English
You alone are awareness, and pure. The world is inert, and has no being of its own. Even ignorance is nothing at all. What is there, then, that you still want to know? Kingdom, sons, wives, bodies and pleasures: you clung to them, and in birth after birth they were lost.
Three words carry it. Chetana is awareness, from the root chit, to perceive. It is what knows, never what is known. Jada is the inert, whatever cannot know itself: body, goods, kingdom. Avidya is not-knowing, from a, not, and vid, to know. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that he alone is awareness, and pure, so nothing that happens ever stains it. The world is inert and has no being apart from the awareness that shows it. Even ignorance, said to hide the self, comes to nothing. So the wish to know, bubhutsa, has nothing left to reach for. Then he names what Janaka holds: kingdom, sons, wives, bodies, pleasures. In his teaching, rebirth is plain fact, and he says that however tightly Janaka clung, each of these was lost in one birth after another. Nothing was ever kept. Janaka had asked how knowledge and freedom are won. The answer is that nothing needs winning, because what is sought is the one who seeks. What is clung to always leaves. The verse asks the listener to see which of the two stays.
Children build sandcastles on the same beach every summer, with towers, moats and flags. Each evening the tide takes them, and the children come back to build again. The beach was never lost. The castles are the kingdom, sons and pleasures; the beach, always there beneath them, is awareness.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you are holding tightly: a possession, a title, a worry about someone. Sit with it for two minutes. 2. Ask: who is aware of this? Notice that the one asking is not the thing. 3. Remember one thing you once clung to that is gone now. Notice that you are still here, still knowing. 4. Hold the first thing a little more loosely for the rest of the evening.
A retired shopkeeper hands the shop keys to his son on the last day. He has opened that shutter every morning for thirty-one years. He stands at the counter, touches the ledger, and does not want to let go. The verse would change this in steps. First he sees that he is the one standing here, aware of the counter, the ledger and the ache, and that the awareness was never the shop. Then the ache can be looked at instead of obeyed. Then the keys can leave his hand while he stays whole. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: what we gripped hardest often hurt most when it went. The verse does not promise the day will be painless, or that the ache will go. It does not make the thirty-one years unreal. Grief at such a parting is natural. Someone who feels low for weeks after a loss is not failing at the teaching and may need a doctor's help as well.
