Craving Is the Bondage
Ashtavakra Gita 10.3

Meaning · English
Wherever craving arises, know that place to be the round of birth and death. Take hold of firm dispassion, and be free of craving, and be happy. Bondage is made of craving and nothing else; the ending of craving is what is called liberation. By not clinging even to becoming, there is contentment again and again in whatever is gained.
Three words carry the teaching. Trishna is craving, literally thirst: the dry pull toward the next thing. Samsara is the round of birth and death, the ceaseless going-around. Vairagya is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Ashtavakra says the round of birth and death is not a place somewhere else. It is wherever thirst arises, so a person can be in it at a dinner table. He asks Janaka to take up firm dispassion, meaning a settled one, not a mood that comes and goes. Without craving, he says, a person is happy. Then he names bondage: it is made of craving and of nothing else. No chain, no jailer, no outside force. Mukti, liberation, is only the ending of that thirst. The last clause says that when a person does not cling even to becoming, to the wish to be this or that, contentment in whatever comes arises again and again. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. The answer is that nothing needs to be built or reached. Only the thirst needs to end. This asks the listener to look at what is actually binding and see that it is the wanting itself, not the thing wanted.
A mosquito bite itches. Scratching feels like relief, yet it keeps the itch alive and spreads it. Left alone, it fades by itself. Craving works like that scratching: each grab for relief renews the thirst, and the round of birth and death is the endless scratching.
1. Today, at some quiet moment, notice one want as it rises: a snack, a message, a purchase. Name it silently as "thirst". 2. Do not obey it or fight it. Wait five minutes and watch where it goes. 3. Tonight, recall one thing that was given to you today without asking, such as a meal, a seat, or a kind word. Rest in that for a minute.
A woman stands in a shop aisle holding a newer phone. Her old one works well. She has already pictured owning it, and her mind has moved on to the next model. The verse changes that moment in small steps. First, the pull is seen as a thirst that has risen in her, not a fact about the phone. Second, the text says bondage is made of that thirst alone, so she can see the grip is in the wanting and not in the shelf. Third, with the thirst unfed for a minute, what she already holds appears sufficient, and contentment in what has come takes its place. Ordinary experience agrees that a want, left unobeyed, often weakens within minutes. The verse does not promise that she will stop needing things, that a broken phone need not be replaced, or that grief and illness are softened by dispassion. It speaks only of the thirst that rides along with them. Where a want has become compulsive and distressing, a doctor is the right person to see.
