Meaning · English
Give up desire, that enemy, and wealth, which is crowded with harm. Give up even the righteous duty that leads to those two. Hold a lack of regard for everything. See friends, land, riches, house, wife, relatives and every such possession as a dream or a conjuror's trick, lasting three days or five.
Ashtavakra names two things to let go: kama and artha. Kama is desire, the pull toward what is not yet had. Artha is wealth, the means of getting it. He calls desire an enemy and wealth something crowded with harm, because the worry of earning and guarding it never ends. He then adds dharma, but only the dharma that serves as a cause of those two, the duty done for the sake of gain. That too is to be set down. What he asks for is adara, regard or attachment, in the form of its absence: sarvatra, toward everything. The reason follows in the second half. Janaka's friends, fields, money, house, wife and heirs are to be seen like a dream, or like indrajala, a conjurer's net, a trick that looks solid while it plays. Three days or five means a very short span. Ashtavakra is answering Janaka's question about dispassion. His answer is that what we grip is brief and borrowed, so the gripping has nothing to hold. He does not tell Janaka to throw his kingdom away. He asks him to stop giving it weight.
A street magician fills a hall with a flock of doves, then the cloth drops and the hall is bare. The audience gasped and clapped, but nobody went home grieving the birds. The doves stand for house, money and relatives: seen clearly as a performance, they can be enjoyed without being clutched.
1. Tonight, pick one possession or title you feel most anxious about keeping, such as your phone, salary or standing. 2. Sit with it for two minutes and ask: five days from now, how much of this will I be carrying? 3. Tomorrow, handle that thing once with a looser grip: lend it, use it without checking on it, or leave it behind for an hour. 4. Notice how the worry about it moves.
A shopkeeper stands at the shutter on the morning the rent is due, counting the till twice and running over what he owes. Every coin feels like a verdict on him. Ashtavakra's teaching asks him to see the shop, the stock and the standing as things that pass through his hands, a short loan and not his self. Step by step, the count stays honest, the rent is still paid, and the dread that treats each rupee as his whole worth begins to ease. Ordinary experience confirms that anxiety about holding grows loudest when we think we are our holdings. The teaching gives no promise that the rent will be met, that loss will not hurt, or that a person in real money trouble needs no practical help. A debt still has to be dealt with, and a worry that will not lift is worth taking to a doctor. The text speaks of the mind's grip, and in its own teaching that grip is what binds.
