Meditation Splits Wrongdoing
Dhyanabindu Upanishad 1

May what we have studied shine. May we never hate one another. Though wrong done were as large as a mountain, stretched across many leagues, it is split open by the discipline of meditation. There is no other way of splitting it, at any time.
Start with the name. Dhyana is meditation, the steady holding of the mind on one thing. Bindu is a point or a drop, the smallest mark that can be made. Upanishad means roughly 'sitting down near', as a student sits near a teacher. So the title is a teaching about the point on which meditation rests, given close at hand. The verse has two parts. The first is a short wish spoken by teacher and student together. May what we study be bright, and may we not hate one another. The text asks for clear learning and for no quarrel between those who learn. The second part is a claim. Pāpa, wrong done or sin, is pictured as a mountain, so wide it covers many yojanas, a yojana being an old measure of road distance. The Upanishad says dhyana yoga splits it. It then closes every other door: nothing else splits it, ever. Why does the text say this? It is opening a book of meditation, and it opens with the highest claim it can make for the practice. The image is of mass and size, as if a heavy thing could be broken by quiet attention. The verse gives no method. The steps come later and elsewhere. What it asks of a practitioner is a turn toward sitting, and a gentle regard for the people sitting beside them.
A woman rides the last bus home after a long shift, going over something sharp she said to a colleague that morning. The stop comes and she has not put it down. Many people know this scene, and it is close to what the verse pictures, a weight carried far beyond the moment that made it. What is generally accepted today is modest. Quiet, regular attention practice can change how a person relates to repeating thoughts, so they hold less tightly. Many doctors and psychologists accept that. It can also help people face what they regret instead of avoiding it. The claim that meditation splits wrongdoing, or that it is the only thing that can, has no support in this kind of evidence. Today's view would add that regret is also eased by apology, repair and changed behaviour, and that sitting alone with painful memories can sometimes stir distress, so a teacher or counsellor matters. The old idea of sin as a literal mass has no modern counterpart. The wish about not hating each other fits well with what is known about how learning groups work.
