Where is duty, where desire, where wealth, where discernment? Where is two, where is not-two, for me, standing in my own greatness? Where is the past, where the future, where even the present? Where is any place, where is always, for me, standing in my own greatness?

Janaka asks a string of questions, and each one is a way of saying none of these is found. They are not found by one who stands in the Self. The refrain carries the reason. Svamahimni means in one's own greatness: sva is own, mahiman is vastness. Janaka stands in what he is, and it has no edges for these things to sit on. Dharma is duty, what a person ought to do. Kama is wanting. Artha is wealth and gain. Viveka is discernment, the sorting of real from unreal. These are the working tools of a life, and he says that from where he stands they are not found, not even the tool of sorting. Dvaita is two, advaita not-two. Even the teaching of non-duality falls away as a position held. Then time and place: past, future, present, and every here. Ashtavakra has taught that the Self is the witness, and the witness is not inside time and space. Time and place appear in it. So Janaka is not describing a loss. He is reporting what he finds when he looks for the things he once leaned on. They are not standing apart from him as separate things, and he is not in need of them.

A film plays on a cinema screen: storms, cities, years passing, a wedding, a war. When the reel ends the screen is as clean as before, and it was never wet, never burnt. The story needs time and place. The screen has none. Janaka speaks as the screen, and the film's hours do not touch it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the light low and no phone. Let any thought of what you must do, want, or earn come up. 2. Each time one comes, ask only: who is aware of this thought? Do not answer. Just notice the one who notices. 3. Then ask the same of a memory, and of a worry about tomorrow. Notice that you were aware of both, and that the awareness itself has no age. 4. Stop when the five minutes end and go on with your evening as usual.

A man sits in a hospital waiting room at three in the morning, his father behind the doors. The clock fills his mind. He replays what he should have said last month and rehearses what he will hear at dawn. Past and future crowd in, and the present, a plastic chair and a cup of tea going cold, feels like nothing. Janaka's questions offer him a different place to look. He might ask who is aware of the dread, and of the replaying. The dread is seen, so it is not all of him. Then the tea, the chair and the hum of the corridor are simply there, with no argument attached to them. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: when the hands have a plain task, dread loosens a little. The teaching does not promise more. It does not lift the fear or change the result behind the doors, and it does not replace a doctor, a nurse or a hand to hold. It claims only that, for Janaka, what looks on is not touched by the hours.
