Where is far, where is near, where is outside, where is inside? Where is coarse, where is fine, for me, who stand in my own greatness? Where is death, where is life, where are the worlds, where is anything of the world? Where is dissolving, where is samadhi, for me, who stand in my own greatness?

Janaka keeps one phrase at the end of every line: svamahimni sthita. Sva is own, mahiman is greatness, sthita is standing, set firm. He stands in his own greatness, the self he has recognised as all there is. From there he asks his questions. They are not riddles. Each one is answered by the standpoint itself. Near and far need a place to measure from, and outside and inside need a wall. Coarse and fine need a body and a mind to compare. Janaka finds no such place, so the pairs have nothing to hold on to. Next come death and life, and loka, the worlds. Loka comes from a root meaning to see: a world is a place that is seen. What belongs to the worlds goes with them. The last two words are the sharpest. Laya is dissolving, the melting of the mind into stillness. Samadhi is gathered absorption, the goal of much practice. Janaka asks where even these are. In Ashtavakra's teaching the self is already free, so no state is needed to reach it. A state comes and goes, and the self does not. This answers the question that began the dialogue: how is freedom won? Janaka says there is no distance left to cross. The verse asks the listener to see that the one who watches every pair is not inside any pair.

A film plays on a cinema screen: far hills, a close face, a birth, a funeral, a hero closing his eyes in trance. The screen is one cloth throughout, never nearer or farther, never born or dead, never entranced. Janaka speaks as the screen, and every scene on it is a kind of picture.

1. Today, for one minute, look at something far away, such as a tree or a rooftop. Then look at your own hand. 2. Ask quietly: what is the one who sees both? Is it near, or far? 3. Tonight before sleep, recall one pair that troubled you today, such as a success and a failure. Ask who stood watching both. 4. Do not try to feel anything. Just notice what the watching is like.

A young woman sits beside her grandmother's bed on what may be the last night. The room is small. The monitor beeps, the corridor is far, and the thought of tomorrow, when the bed is empty, feels unbearably near. Life and death have become two sharp edges, and her mind keeps cutting itself on them. Janaka's words ask a different question in that chair. Who is it that sees the nearness of the bed and the distance of tomorrow? She need not argue with her fear. She can notice that the fear is seen, and that what sees it is not shaking. She stays by the bed, holds the hand and answers when spoken to, while the watching goes on quietly under the pain. The verse does not promise that she will grieve less, and it does not stop the death. Ordinary experience shows that a person who is steady in herself is more use at a bedside than one swept away. Where a doctor or nurse is needed, they are still needed.
