The Enquiry into Dharma

Mimamsa Sutras 1.1.1

Meaning · English

Now, therefore, the enquiry into dharma.

Jaimini opens with a task, not a claim. Three words carry it. Atha, 'now', marks a starting point: Mimamsa holds that a student comes to this enquiry after learning the Vedic texts by heart and in order. Atah, 'therefore', says there is a reason: those texts exist to serve a purpose, and that purpose is not yet understood. Jijnasa, 'wish to know', makes the work an investigation, a desire to find out. Dharma is the subject. For Mimamsa it means duty or right action: what one ought to do, as distinct from what simply is. The school's question is how anyone could know such a thing. Shabara's commentary, the classic reading, adds that dharma is what leads to the highest good. The rest of the work tests how it can be known and what can be said about it.

Picture a new tenant handed a thick folder of house rules. Before arguing over any one rule, they sit down and ask what the folder is for and how its instructions are meant to be read. That sitting down is the opening. The folder is the Veda, the question is its purpose, and dharma is what the rules aim at.

The sutra's problem is a familiar one in ethics: how do we know what we ought to do, as opposed to what is the case? Hume pointed out that facts alone do not yield an 'ought', and Mimamsa reaches a similar gap by its own road. It says perception and inference describe what exists, so duty needs a different source. Modern deontology, associated with Kant, also treats duty as binding apart from outcomes, though it grounds duty in reason, not in a text. Mimamsa's answer, scripture as the source, would be rejected by most contemporary philosophers. Its method still stands: ask first what kind of knowledge a claim requires before arguing about its content.
