Duty Defined by Command

Mimamsa Sutras 1.1.2

Meaning · English

Dharma is the good that is marked out by a Vedic injunction.

The question behind the sutra: having decided to enquire into dharma, what exactly is it, and what shows it to us? Mimamsa, the school of Jaimini, answers in one line. Dharma is an artha, a good or beneficial aim, and it is known through codana, an injunction: a Vedic sentence that urges a person to act, such as 'one who wants heaven should sacrifice'. The word lakshana means the mark or means by which something is identified. So an injunction is the pointer that picks dharma out. The reasoning, as Shabara is well known to read it, runs in steps. Dharma is not an existing thing like a tree or a pot. It is something to be brought about, and what is yet to be done cannot be seen by the senses, which only meet what is already present. Only a sentence that enjoins can tell you what ought to be done. Dharma is therefore known through enjoining words, and not through perception or inference alone.

Think of a road sign reading 'Turn left here'. Nothing in the landscape shows you that the turn exists as a duty; you could stare at the junction forever. The sign tells you what to do. Mimamsa sees an injunction the same way: a pointer that speaks of what ought to be done, which no amount of looking can show.

Philosophers of language will recognise the distinction between describing and directing. Speech act theory separates statements about the world from commands, and Hume's gap between 'is' and 'ought' says no list of facts alone yields a duty. Mimamsa lands in a similar place: perception reports what is, so duty needs another source. Where it differs is the source it names. Most modern ethics grounds obligation in reason, human welfare, social agreement or conscience, not in an authorless text. Deontology is the closest cousin, since it treats some acts as owed regardless of outcome, though Mimamsa's injunctions also promise results. Whether any sentence can itself create obligation, rather than only express a speaker's will, is still debated in metaethics.
