Meaning · English
When a person's senses are in contact with something that exists, knowledge arises. That is perception. It is not a means of knowing dharma, because it grasps only what is already present.
The question behind this sutra is how dharma, duty as the Mimamsa school understands it, can be known. Earlier the school said dharma is known through command. Now it asks whether ordinary perception could do the job instead. Perception is pratyaksha: knowledge produced when a person's senses meet an object that actually exists. The sutra's reason is that perception only grasps what is already there, vidyamana. Dharma is not like that. Mimamsa treats it as what ought to be done, something not yet existing in front of us, tied to results that come later. The eye can show a jar on the table. It cannot show an obligation or what a deed will bring. So Mimamsa holds that perception is not a nimitta, a means of knowing dharma. Shabara, the classic commentator, is well known to read the sutra this way, as a definition of perception that quietly excludes it from this task. What follows is that another source must be sought, and the school names it next: the word.
A thermometer reads the temperature of the room right now, accurately. It cannot tell you what you ought to do tomorrow, or whether a promise should be kept. Perception is that thermometer: faithful to the present, silent about what is yet to be done.
Philosophers know this gap as the is-ought problem, associated with Hume: no list of observed facts, taken alone, yields what ought to be done. Mimamsa's point sits close to it, though its answer differs. Hume leaned toward sentiment and convention. Mimamsa turns to authoritative command. Empiricists would accept that perception covers only present, existing things, and add that science reaches the unseen through inference and testing, which Mimamsa's argument here does not address. Ethics today is still divided on whether duties are discovered, constructed or commanded. Mimamsa's view that duty is known only through verbal injunction resembles divine command theories and deontology, and it is contested like them.
