Whatever world a person of cleansed inner nature holds in mind, and whatever wishes he wishes, that world he wins and those wishes are his. So whoever longs for well-being should honor one who knows the Self.

Three words carry the verse. Sattva is one's inner being, the quality of the mind. Vishuddha means thoroughly cleansed, so a vishuddha-sattva person is one whose mind has been made clear. Atmajna is the knower of the atman. The atman is the Self, the inner witness that the Upanishad says is one's real nature. Bhuti is flourishing, or well-being. Angiras tells Saunaka that a person with a cleansed mind gets what he sets his mind on. Whatever world he holds in thought, and whatever he wishes, whether for himself or for others, comes to him. Because of this, he says, anyone who wants to flourish should honor a knower of the Self. The reason follows from the verses before it. The Self is seen only when the mind is made clear. A clear mind has no crossed purposes, so its wishes are steady and carry weight. A knower of the Self has such a mind to the fullest degree. Shankara reads this as a lesser fruit of that knowledge. In his reading, the knower himself wants nothing more, and honoring him is advice for those who still want well-being. What the text asks of Saunaka is to look for clarity of mind, in himself and in the people he respects, and to value it above the wishes themselves.

A farmer clears stones and old roots from a field before sowing. The seed in the bag is the same as his neighbor's, but the cleared ground takes it and the cluttered ground does not. The wishes are the seed. The cleansed mind is the cleared field, and it decides what the seed becomes.

1. Tonight, write down one thing you are wishing for, in a single sentence. 2. Under it, write whether anyone else would gain from it too. Notice if envy, fear or hurry is mixed into the wish. 3. Tomorrow, think of one person whose steadiness you respect. Spend two minutes thanking them in person, or by message, for something specific they have done.

A father stands at the school gate on the morning his daughter leaves for hostel. He wants her to do well. He also notices he is comparing her to the neighbor's son, and that part of the wish is fear about what people will say. The Mundaka's teaching would change that moment in steps. First, he would see that the wish is tangled. Part of it is for her, and part is for his own standing. Second, he would let the second part drop. What remains is simple: that she be well, learn, and be treated kindly. Third, he would give her that wish plainly, as a few unhurried words and a hand on her shoulder, rather than a list of warnings. The Upanishad would say a wish held this clearly has more strength than a crowded one. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind full of worry chooses badly and speaks sharply. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that she will pass, stay healthy or be spared hardship, and it does not take away the ache of her leaving.
