Mind Serves the Seer

Yoga Sutras 4.24

Meaning · English

The mind, though speckled with countless residues of past experience, works for the sake of another, because it acts only by putting many parts together.

Three terms carry the sutra. Vasana is a residue: what past experience leaves behind in the mind, like a scent that stays in cloth. Citra means speckled or many-coloured. Parartha is made of para, another, and artha, purpose: for another's sake. Samhatyakaritva means acting by joining together, since it works only as a combination of parts. The plain sense: the mind is crowded with endless impressions, a patchwork. Yet it does not exist for itself. It is an assembly, and Patanjali holds that an assembly serves something beyond its own parts. Why say it here? Sutra 4.23 showed the mind taking the colour of both seer and seen. That leaves a question: whose is all this colour? The answer is that the mind is the instrument, and the seer is the one it serves. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, compares the mind to a house. A house is built from many parts, and it exists for the one who lives in it. The mind, with all its impressions, is likewise for another. The later commentators follow him in naming that other as the seer.

A quilt is made of a hundred scraps in clashing colours, cut and stitched one by one. No scrap is the point. The whole thing exists for the person who sleeps under it. The mind's many impressions are the scraps, and the seer is the sleeper.

1. Once today, when you are busy with a task, pause for ten seconds and name three separate things your mind is holding at once: a worry, a plan, a memory. 2. Ask quietly, "Who is aware of all this?" Do not hunt for an answer. Just notice that the noticing is a different thing from the items. 3. Before bed, spend two minutes recalling the day's mental clutter as a pile of parts, and see that you were the one watching it.
