The Fully Colored Mind
Yoga Sutras 4.23
Meaning · English
When the mind is colored by both the seer and what is seen, it can take in every kind of object.
Three words carry this sutra. Citta is the mind-field, the instrument that receives and holds impressions. Drashta is the seer, the one who witnesses. Drishya is the seen, whatever can be witnessed. Uparaktam means colored, stained or tinted by something near it. Sarvartham means serving every object, or able to grasp all things. So the sutra says this: the mind is tinted from two sides. The seer lends it the light of awareness. The seen lends it the shape of an object. Because it carries both, it can know anything at all, inner or outer. Patanjali says this after the sutras that ask whether the mind knows itself or needs another mind to know it. Here he answers what the mind actually is: a meeting place, not a knower on its own. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: the mind, colored by the seer and by the object, is a single thing that appears to know and to be known, and so seems to be the knowing self. The commentators agree that this is why the mind is easily mistaken for the seer.
A clear glass of water sits on a table beside a red cloth, in a window's light. The water takes on a reddish tint from the cloth and shows the light from the window. The glass has neither of its own. The mind is the glass: awareness gives its light, the object gives its color.
1. Once today, when you notice something, such as a sound, a face or a worry, pause for ten seconds. 2. Say to yourself quietly: there is the thing, and there is the knowing of it. 3. Notice that the mind seems to hold both at once, and see whether you can tell them apart. 4. Do this again in the evening with a thought rather than an object.
