Awareness Turned Toward Itself
Yoga Sutras 4.22
Meaning · English
Awareness does not travel from place to place. When the mind takes on the shape of that awareness, the seer's own intelligence becomes known to it.
Three words carry this sutra. Citi is pure awareness, the seer, from the root for 'to perceive.' Pratisamkrama is a passing over, a moving from one place to another. The sutra says awareness has none of it. Buddhi here is the intelligence of the mind, and samvedana is full knowing, a knowing that is felt from within. The plain sense: awareness stays where it is and does not cross over into objects. Yet the mind can take on its shape, the way a clear surface holds a likeness. When the mind has that shape, the seer's own intelligence is known. Patanjali says this because the two sutras before it close off two ways of explaining self-knowledge. The mind cannot watch itself while it watches the world, and a second mind watching the first leads to endless regress. So he gives the answer: awareness does not move or divide. The mind takes its form. Vyasa's Bhashya, as the commentators read it, says awareness is unchanging and does not enter the mind. The mind, shaped like it, gives rise to the knowing of the self. Later commentators differ over how the likeness is described, but the commentators agree that awareness itself does not act.
Think of a still pond at dusk with the moon above it. The moon does not come down, and the water does not climb up. Yet the pond holds a clear moon within it. The moon stands for awareness, which never moves. The pond is the mind, which can only take on its likeness.
1. Once today, sit for two minutes somewhere quiet, such as at a desk or on a bench, and let thoughts come as they come. 2. Notice that you are aware of each thought, and that the awareness itself does not seem to move with it. 3. Ask without hurry: what is it that notices this? Do not try to answer. Just stay with the question for a few breaths. 4. Afterward, note whether the mind felt busy or settled. Make no judgment either way.
