Endless Watchers, Tangled Memory
Yoga Sutras 4.21
Meaning · English
If one mind were seen by a second mind, that second would need a third to see it, and so on without end. Memories would also run together in confusion.
Key words. Citta is the mind-field, all that thinks, feels and remembers. Buddhi here means the knowing act of a mind, its awareness of something. Atiprasanga is a running on too far, an endless regress. Smriti is memory. Sankara is mixing, a jumble. The plain sense: suppose the mind is known by another mind, a second one standing behind it. Then that second mind is also something known, so a third must know it, and a fourth after that. The series never stops. Worse, memory would be muddled. Each mind in the chain would hold its own impressions, and it would be unclear whose remembering was whose. Why Patanjali says it: the sutras just before argue that the mind is seen, so it cannot be the final seer. A reader might reply that another mind sees it. This sutra closes that door. A chain of minds cannot ground knowing. Something must see without being seen in turn, and that is the Self. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it this way: the supposed second mind would need yet another to know it, and memory would fail to stay distinct. The commentators agree on the regress. They differ only in how they lay out the memory problem.
Picture two mirrors held facing each other. Each shows the other, and that one shows another, receding down a hall with no last mirror. Nothing in the hall is the one who is looking. The mirrors are minds watching minds, and the looker must stand outside them.
1. Once today, for two minutes, sit and notice a thought, such as a worry or a plan. 2. Then notice the one noticing it. Ask, can that too be noticed? 3. Let the noticing of the noticer happen once or twice. Observe whether the chain has an end, or just goes on. 4. Afterward, write one line about what you saw. Keep it plain.
