Meaning · English
At your base, the root, you are with Samaya, whose dance is gentle. I think of him, the nine-formed one, who plays the great fierce dance of the nine moods. From these two, joined in kindness for the work of making, this world was born, with a father and a mother.
The poet pictures a dance at the lowest of the inner centres, the root. Two figures are there. One is Shiva, called the nine-formed and the actor of the great tandava, the fierce, wide dance. Its nine moods are the navarasa, the nine flavours of feeling: love, laughter, pity, anger, heroism, fear, disgust, wonder and peace. The other is the Goddess, here called Samaya, a name for her as Shiva's inseparable partner. Her dance is lasya, the soft and graceful kind. Shiva's is vast and strong, hers is tender. The poem says that the world came from the two together. They turned to making it out of daya, kindness, and each fills the other, which is what sanatha, joined with a lord, conveys. So the world has a father and a mother, and is not the work of one alone. This answers a question the hymn has kept returning to since its opening: Shiva acts only when joined with Shakti. Here that teaching is a scene in the body. The poet does not command anyone. He says what he calls to mind, manye, I think of. Lakshmidhara's commentary takes the nine forms as tied to the nine-fold structure of the Sri Chakra. The commentators also read the root as the place where the climb through the centres begins.
Two palms make a clap. One hand swung alone only moves the air, and the sound needs the other. Shiva and the Goddess are the two palms, and the world is the sound that comes only when they meet.
