Meaning · English

I serve a dark cloud of yours, whose only shelter is Manipura. By your power lightning flickers in it, the enemy of darkness, and a rainbow bound with jewelled ornaments wraps it. It rains on the three worlds, scorched by Hara's sun.

The poet gives the Goddess a new picture: a dark rain cloud. Three words carry it. Shyama means dark, the deep blue-black of a monsoon cloud, which is also the colour of rain-bearing mercy. Manipura means the city of jewels (mani, jewel; pura, city), the centre at the navel where the cloud has its one refuge. Hara is a name of Shiva, here the sun, and mihira means sun. Now the clauses. The cloud holds lightning, and the lightning flashes by her shakti, her power, and drives off darkness. A rainbow of many jewels and ornaments is bound around it. The cloud rains, and what it rains on is the three worlds, burnt by the sun that is Hara. The poet says the worlds are scorched, and he says the rain is the answer. The question behind the verse is how the Goddess meets a burning world. Verse 39 gave her glance as the relief. This verse gives another: she is the cloud that gathers where the jewels are and breaks over everything dry. The poet only says he serves it. He promises nothing and gives no instruction for use.

On a white-hot afternoon the street is baked and everyone has gone indoors. Then a dark cloud slides over, the sky flickers, a faint arc of colour shows at its edge, and rain arrives. The Goddess is that cloud, the heat is the world's scorching, and the rain is her mercy.
