Meaning · English

In your own seat of the self-support, I praise the fire that dwells there without pause, and the great fire of dissolution, and the Samaya who is with it. When her glance falls and the worlds burn in great wrath, your eye, wet with mercy, spreads coolness over them.

Three words carry the verse. Svadhishthana is the centre named "own-standing place", from sva, self, and adhishthana, seat. Samvarta is the fire that gathers up and ends the world at its close; the root sense is a rolling together. Dayardra means wet with mercy, from daya, compassion, and ardra, moist. The poet begins by praising a fire that sits in her svadhishthana and never goes out. He then praises the great world-ending fire, and Samaya, who is joined to it. In the text's teaching, Samaya is the Goddess herself in her inner, quiet form. Next comes the turn. When her eye looks on the worlds in great wrath, they burn. Yet the same look is soaked in compassion, and it brings coolness. So the verse says two things at once: she holds the power that ends all things, and her mercy is what meets that power. The reason he gives is simple. He is praising her for holding both together, so that dissolution is never the last word. Lakshmidhara reads the fire and Samaya as an inner pairing within the worship of her, not only as a picture of the cosmos. Some tradition says a mantra lies hidden in the verse, and that is all this reading will say of it. The verse asks the listener to see her glance as the place where fire and cooling meet.

Picture a mother standing at a stove with the flame high under a pan. The heat is real and it will burn anything left too long. Then she lays a cool wet cloth on a child's forehead with the same hand. The flame is the world-ending fire, and the cloth is her merciful glance.
