I worship the pair of swans, utterly absorbed in the honey of the fully opened lotus of awareness, who move in the minds of the great. By their speech, learning swells to eighteen times its measure. Like swans drawing milk from water, they take only the good from every fault.
The poet worships a pair of swans, and the pair is the Goddess with Shiva. Three words carry the verse. Samvit is awareness, from sam and vid, to know fully. Hamsa is the swan. Manasa is both the mind and the lake where swans are said to live, so moving in the minds of the great is also gliding on their lake. The swans taste only one thing: the honey of the awareness lotus as it opens. Their joy is that single flavour. They live in the minds of the great, those whose attention is already turned inward. Then comes the claim about their speech. When they speak, learning grows eighteen times over. The text names the number but not the list, and the commentators differ on what it counts. The last line gives the swan's old skill. Offered milk mixed with water, a swan is said to take the milk and leave the water. So the pair take what is good from every fault and leave the rest. The verse is placed here, after the hymn's climb through the centres, because it answers a question: what does her presence do to a mind? The poet says it gives a mind that is steady in one taste, wide in learning and able to sort. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see her this way. Lakshmidhara, the classic commentator, takes the swans as the pair of Shiva and Shakti, as the verse itself suggests.
A tea strainer held over a cup. The leaves stay in the mesh, the clear liquor runs through. In the same way the swan pair are said to keep what is good in each thing and let its fault stay behind.
