Meaning · English
At the Vishuddha I serve Shiva, clear as flawless crystal, source of space, and the Goddess too, set equal to him. In the light of you both, falling like moonbeams, the world shines, its inner darkness shaken off, like a cakori bird.
Three words carry the verse. Vishuddha means very pure, from shudh, to be clean. It is the name of the centre at the throat. Vyoma is sky or space, the first and subtlest of the elements, and the throat is where the text places it. Cakori is a bird of old poetry, said to live on moonbeams. The poet says he serves Shiva at this centre. Shiva is white and clear like pure crystal, and he is the source of space. Then comes the Goddess, and the poet adds that she is held equal to Shiva. He does not rank her beneath him. Crystal has no colour of its own and takes the colour of what touches it. The poet's picture is a clear light that the two of them share. Their shining is compared to moonbeams. In that light the whole world is lit, and the darkness inside it is shaken off. The world is like the cakori, glad and fed by the glow. The text does not call the world false. It calls it dark within until this light reaches it. The question underneath is what lies behind the world's clearness. The hymn answers that Shiva and Shakti, together and equal, give it. The commentators read the throat as the stage where the elements grow fine enough to meet this light. The verse asks only that the listener see the pair as one source.
Picture a shuttered room at night. Someone opens the window on a full moon, and the floor, the walls and the faces in the room become visible, with nothing added except light. The world is the room, and the pair at the throat is the moon.
