Meaning · English

I bow to supreme Shambhu, seated at your command centre, wearing the glow of ten million suns and moons, the highest consciousness pressed close along his sides. Worshipped with devotion, he dwells in the brow-world, a place unlit by sun, moon or fire, beyond their reach.

Three words carry the picture. Ajna, the name of the chakra, means command: the centre where the Goddess's order is received. Shambhu is Shiva in his gentle, auspicious aspect. Paracit is supreme consciousness, from para, beyond, and cit, awareness. The poet bows to Shiva seated at the brow, and the text gives his radiance as the light of countless suns and moons together. Beside him, on both sides, stands consciousness itself. The text shows Shiva never alone, which echoes the hymn's teaching that he acts only with her. Then comes the claim about the place. The text says whoever worships him in devotion dwells in the brow-world, a realm that sun, moon and fire cannot reach. It calls it a world without ordinary light and a world of light in one breath. The poet means that the light there is awareness, not a flame. The commentators read the two sides as the pair of Shiva and Shakti held together. The verse is placed here because the hymn is climbing the inner centres toward her, and this is the sixth, just below the thousand-petalled lotus. It asks only that the listener hold the picture: devotion, not effort of will, is what the text names as the way in.

Carry a lit candle out into the noon sun. The flame is still there, but it adds nothing and can hardly be seen. The brow-world is like that: the text says a light of its own, which is awareness, makes sun, moon and fire unneeded.
