You are mind, you are space, you are the wind, and the fire that drives the wind. You are water, and you are earth. When you have become all this, nothing remains beyond you. To turn yourself into the world's form, you alone take on the shape of Shiva and his consort, whose nature is awareness and joy.
The hymn lists what the world is made of: mind, space, wind, fire, water, earth. Then it says all of them are the Goddess. The poet calls her the one who has turned herself into each. Three words carry the teaching. Parinama means transformation, from pari, fully, and nam, to bend: a thing bending itself into another form. Chit is awareness, from cit, to perceive. Ananda is joy, the fullness that needs nothing added. The poet says that once she has bent herself into the elements, nothing exists outside her. So the world is not something placed next to her. It is her own substance shaped. The second half gives the reason. She does this so that her own self, which is awareness and joy by nature, can take the form of the universe. She does it by appearing as Shiva and his consort, the pair. The verse answers a question the earlier verses raise: if Shiva cannot act without Shakti, what is she in the end? The poet answers that she is both partners and the world they move in. Lakshmidhara's commentary reads the fire in the wind's driver as a fifth element placed in order, so the list holds the elements together with mind. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see the whole world, inner and outer, as her form.
Think of a potter's clay that becomes a cup, a jar and a lamp. Each has its own shape and use, yet all are clay and nothing else is in them. The elements and the mind are the shapes. She is the clay that stays the same through every one.
