Having reached him, the sages are content with what they know. Their selves are settled, their longing gone, their minds still. Steady and joined to the Self, they find him present on every side, and they enter into the whole of everything.

Angiras is describing to Saunaka what the knowers of Brahman are like once they arrive. Brahman is the one reality underneath everything. Four words carry the description. Trpta means satisfied, and it is jnana-trpta: filled by knowing, not by getting. Raga means colouring or attachment, the pull that stains the mind, and vita-raga means that pull has gone. Dhira means steady, one who holds the mind firm. Yukta-atman means a self that is joined, yoked to the atman, the Self within. The text says these sages are content because they have reached what was sought. Their wanting stops because nothing is missing. They are calm because the pull is gone. Brahman is sarvaga, going everywhere, so they do not find it by travelling. They find it on every side. Then they enter the whole, sarvam. Shankara reads this entering as recognition, not movement: since Brahman already fills everything, reaching it means knowing one is not apart from it. The verse asks the listener to see that the goal is not a far place, and that peace comes from completion, not from collecting.

Salt stirred into a glass of water vanishes, yet every sip tastes of it. Nothing was carried anywhere and nothing is left behind to point at. The sage is the salt, the water is the whole, and being found everywhere is what the entering looks like.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before bed and name one thing you wanted today that you did not get. Notice whether you still need it. 2. Tomorrow, when you feel a pull toward your phone or a snack, stop for ten breaths. Watch the pull rise and fade without obeying it. 3. Once this week, walk outside for ten minutes and look at one ordinary thing, such as a tree or a wall, as part of the same world you are in.

A man hands in his keys on his last day at work. For thirty years, the next goal has driven him. Now he stands in the car park with nothing to chase, and the quiet feels like loss. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. It says the sages were satisfied by knowing, so contentment need not wait on the next gain. It says their longing had gone, so the restlessness he feels is the pull itself, and it can be watched without being obeyed. It says they were steady and joined to the Self, so he can turn from what he has stopped doing to what he is. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind always reaching for more is tired, and that it rests when the reaching eases. The verse does not promise that this man will feel no grief for the work he leaves, or that the calm arrives in an afternoon. It describes sages who have arrived, not a quick remedy. Where low mood lingers past a few weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
