Yoga Sutras 4.25

Meaning · English

For the one who sees the distinction between mind and self, the brooding over what one's own being is, and the effort to cultivate it, falls away completely.

Three terms carry the sutra. Viseshadarshin is the one who sees the distinction: visesha is a difference, darshin a seer. Atmabhava is the sense of being a self, a way of taking oneself to be. Bhavana is dwelling on something again and again until it grows, a brooding or cultivating. Vinivritti is a turning away, a full stopping. Plainly, then, the sutra says this. When someone has clearly seen the difference between the mind and the one who sees, the restless dwelling on 'what am I, what is my being' ends. Patanjali says it because the earlier sutras of this chapter describe a mind shaped by impressions that keep it asking about itself. That asking rests on not yet seeing the difference. Once the difference is seen, the question has no more work to do. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads it this way: in one who has not seen, the thoughts 'who was I, what am I, how shall I be' keep arising, and in the one who has seen they cease. The commentators differ mainly on how final this stopping is, and on whether it is a lasting state or comes with the ripening of discernment.

Someone pats every pocket, checks the table, the bag, the coat on the chair, certain the keys are lost. Then they find the keys in their own hand. The searching stops without any effort, because nothing is left to look for. The restless questioning about the self is that patting of pockets, and seeing the distinction is the keys.

1. Once today, sit alone for five minutes, in a chair or on a step, without a phone. 2. Notice any thought that asks about you: what you are like, what you ought to become, whether you are enough. 3. Name it quietly, 'a question about myself', and see that it is a thought, with someone noticing it. 4. Watch for a moment when the question comes and nothing answers it, and see what the noticing is doing then.
