Vyasa asked Sanatkumara what the elder brother did after the enemy of the gods was killed. Sanatkumara, remembering Shiva's lotus feet, told it. When Hiranyaksha was slain by Hari in the form of the boar, his brother Hiranyakashipu burned with rage and grief. He sent out fierce demons to destroy the creatures of the world, and they did it gladly. The gods left heaven and wandered the earth unseen. Hiranyakashipu performed the water rites for his brother and comforted the widows. Then he wished to be unconquerable, ageless and deathless, with no rival and one kingdom. In the valley of Mount Mandara he practiced terrible austerity, arms raised, eyes on the sky, standing on his big toes.

While he burned in penance, the gods grew strong, defeated the demons and returned to their own places. But a smoking fire rose from his head and scorched the worlds above, across and below. Scorched, the gods fled to Brahma's world, their faces drawn, and told him. Brahma, with Bhrigu, Daksha and others, went to the demon king's hermitage and found the worlds heated by his penance. Brahma said, "Ask for a boon." Hiranyakashipu answered, "Lord of creatures, let me never fear death. Not from weapons, nooses, thunderbolts, dry trees, mountains, water, fire or enemies. Not from gods, demons, sages or perfected beings, or any being you made. Not in heaven or on earth, by day or night, not above or below." Brahma, pleased, granted it.

Brahma told him, "Your penance is complete after ninety-six thousand years. Rise and rule the demons." Hiranyakashipu was glad. Anointed king, he set his mind on destroying the three worlds. Drunk with pride, he uprooted all dharma and defeated the gods in battle. In fear, Indra and the gods took Brahma's leave and went to the Milk Ocean, where Hari sleeps. They worshipped Vishnu with praises and told him all their sorrow. Vishnu rose, comforted them, and said, "I will kill the demon by force. Go home content." Taking a fearful form, matted, fanged, sharp-nailed, half lion and half man, blazing like the fire at the world's end, he entered the demons' city at sunset.

Narasimha fought the mighty demons, killing and seizing them, and roamed the city breaking them. The demons stared at his unmatched power. Prahlada, the king's son, saw the lion and said to his father, "This is the blessed Lord himself, come into your city as a man-lion. Stop fighting and take refuge. No warrior in the three worlds can face him. Bow, and rule." The wicked king said, "Are you afraid, son?" and ordered his best demons to seize the lion. They rushed in like moths into a flame and burned in a moment. The king fought him with every weapon. A whole day of Brahma passed in their duel. The demon made many arms, but Narasimha seized him, set him on his knees and tore out his heart with his claws.

Narasimha threw the lifeless body down, crushed. Pleased, he called Prahlada, who bowed, anointed him king, and went on to a goal beyond thought. The gods rejoiced, bowed to Vishnu and went home. Thus, Sanatkumara said, he had told of Andhaka's birth from Rudra, Hiranyaksha's death by the Boar, and the brother's end by Narasimha, with Prahlada made king. Now he would tell of Andhaka's power, and his war with Hara. Once Hiranyaksha's son Andhaka was taunted by his drunken cousins: "Why do you rule? Hiranyaksha was a fool to have a blind son. You have no share in the kingdom." Andhaka calmed them, then went at night into the empty forest, ten thousand years of penance, on one foot, fasting, arms raised.

He lit a fire and for a year offered his own flesh and blood into it, cutting it from his body with a sharp blade and reciting mantras. Only sinew and bone remained. When he had no flesh left and moved to throw himself in, the people of heaven saw him, afraid and amazed. Brahma, praised by the gods, came and stopped him. "Choose a boon." Andhaka asked for his lost kingdom, Prahlada and the rest as servants, divine sight, Indra and the gods as tribute-payers, and no death from gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, serpents or men, nor from Narayana. Brahma, alarmed, said, "Take some cause of your end. A very long life is for good men to refuse." Andhaka said, "Among the finest women there is one like a mother to me, unreachable in body, speech or mind. If I desire her, let that be my death."

Astonished, Brahma remembered Shiva's feet, received his command and said, "All you ask will be." Andhaka, mere bone and sinew, asked, "How can I fight like this? Touch me with your holy hand." Brahma touched his body, then went home with Indra. At the touch Andhaka was whole, strong and sighted. He entered his city, and Prahlada and the other demons gave him the kingdom and served him. He went to conquer heaven, made Indra pay tribute, and conquered nagas, birds, rakshasas, gandharvas, yakshas, men, and the lion-faced beasts, ruling all three worlds. He enjoyed thousands of women in every region, and ten thousand years passed. Drunk with pride, he overcame his own counselors, destroyed Vedic dharma, and honored no god, teacher or brahmin.

One day he came with his army to Mount Mandara, found it golden, and built a strong city there. His ministers Duryodhana, Vaidhasa and Hastin saw a lovely woman in a cave. They ran to Andhaka and described a sage in meditation, crescent moon in his hair, elephant hide at his waist, serpents wound round him, skull garland, trident, bow, ash-smeared. Beside him stood a fierce man with a monkey face and an old white bull. Beside the sage sat the jewel of all women. Desire-struck, Andhaka sent them to demand her. They said, "Whose son are you? Whose is this woman? Give her to Andhaka, lord of jewels in three worlds. Put down your weapons or you will lose your body." Shiva, smiling, replied, "I am Rudra. This is my wife, who bears all. Take what you like."

The ministers returned and mocked him. Andhaka blazed up like fire fed with ghee, took his sword and set out, struck by Kama's arrows. He reached the cave guarded by Virakas, Shiva's son. Like a moth to a lamp, he fought and was beaten, his sword crushed. Prahlada, Virochana, Bali, Bana, Kujambha, Shambara and Vritra fought and were cut down by Virakas. Shiva told Parvati that his strength had faded through his love of her, and went to the forest to practice the Great Pashupata vow for a thousand years. Parvati waited in the cave, guarded by Virakas. Andhaka returned and fought twenty-five hundred days and nights. His arrows sealed the cave. Parvati called on Brahma and Vishnu, and they came in women's forms with Indra and the gods. Goddesses and Virakas drove off the demons. Shiva returned, and Parvati bowed to him.

Andhaka's envoy Vidhasa demanded the woman. Shiva answered, "If you are strong, fight me." Andhaka's army swallowed the gods, Vishnu, Brahma and Indra. Virakas wept. Shiva rode his bull, summoned Nandi, and fought. Virakas and Vishnu came out of Vidhasa's mouth, and Shukra revived the dead demons until Shiva swallowed him. Shiva impaled Andhaka on his trident and held him in the sky. Rain and sun wore him away, but he did not die. He praised Shiva, who gave him leadership of the ganas. The gods worshipped Shiva. Shiva returned to Parvati and his son in the cave, glad.
