The story · English

Vyasa asked Sanatkumara how the blessed Narayana had come to lie with Tulasi, and by what means. Sanatkumara answered that Narayana is the one who does the work of the gods and is the refuge of good people. He took the form of Shankhachuda and enjoyed himself with Tulasi, who was Shankhachuda's wife. It is a story, he said, that carries delight, and it concerns Vishnu, who obeys Shiva's command. In the middle of the battle a voice had spoken from the sky. Hari heard it, and Lord Shambhu sent him to act. Hari took Shankhachuda's finest armour, and by his own illusion he went quickly to Tulasi's house, wearing the shape of Shankhachuda.

At her door he beat a drum and announced a victory, and the lovely woman heard it. Filled with joy, she looked down at the royal road from her window with great eagerness. She gave wealth to the brahmins and had the auspicious rites performed. Knowing her husband had come home, she dressed quickly. Vishnu stepped down from the chariot and entered her house, still in Shankhachuda's form. She washed his feet, bowed to him, and wept. She seated him on a jewelled throne and gave him betel scented with camphor. She said, "Today my birth and my life have borne fruit, for I see my lord home again from the war." Then she looked at him with a smile and asked, in a sweet voice, how the battle had gone.

Tulasi said: "He is the lord who destroys countless worlds, whom Vishnu and Brahma obey. He is the father of the three gods, with qualities and without them, who takes form for his devotees. He lives on Kailasa, and in one moment he ends millions of universes. You went to fight him, my lord. How did that war come about, and how did you win?" Vishnu smiled and answered her gently. "When I went to the field there was a great uproar. Gods and demons fought, and the gods beat the demons. Then I fought the gods, and they fled to Shankara. Rudra came, and he and I fought a full year. The demons were destroyed. Brahma made peace between us and gave the gods back their rule. Shiva went home to Shivaloka, and I came here. The danger is gone."

Having spoken, the lord of the worlds lay down, and Vishnu took his pleasure with her. But the faithful wife noticed that something was wrong, and she thought it over. "Who are you?" she asked. "Tell me at once. You have used illusion to have me, and my chastity is gone. I curse you." Afraid of the curse, Hari took his own beautiful form. Tulasi saw him and knew him by his marks. Furious that her fidelity was broken, she said: "Vishnu, you have no mercy, and your heart is like stone. My husband was killed through the breaking of my vow. So become stone yourself, by my curse. Those who call you an ocean of mercy are mistaken. Why was a devotee who had done no wrong killed for another's sake?" Then she wept bitterly, and grieved without stopping.

Seeing her weep, Vishnu remembered Shankara, who bewilders the world, and Shankara appeared, kind to his devotees. Hari bowed to him. Shankara spoke gently to them both: "Do not weep, Tulasi. People eat the fruit of their own actions. This was the result of your own austerity. Leave this body and take a divine one, and live with Hari always. Your old body will become the river Gandaki in Bharata. By my boon you will become the Tulasi plant, the best of flowers, and in Vaikuntha you will be the goddess of trees. Hari will become a stone on the Gandaki's bank, and sharp-toothed worms will cut rings into it. That is the Shalagrama, with marks such as Lakshmi-Narayana. Whoever tears Tulasi leaves from a Shalagrama will lose a wife in another life. Whoever guards Shalagrama, Tulasi and the conch together will be dear to Hari." Shambhu returned home. Tulasi took a divine form and went with Vishnu to Vaikuntha. Her old body became the river, and Vishnu became the stone.
