No One Can Restrain Him
Ashtavakra Gita 4.4
Meaning · English
The great-souled one has known that this whole world is the Self alone. He lives as whatever comes to him. Who could be able to forbid him anything?
Ashtavakra gives Janaka three small ideas. Atman is the Self, the one awareness that each person means by 'I'. Mahatman, the great-souled one, is a person whose sense of self has grown as wide as that. Yadricchaya means 'as it happens': he lives by what comes of itself, not by plans made out of craving and fear. The last word, niseddhum, means to forbid or hold back. The clauses run in order. The text says this person has known that the whole world is the Self. It does not call the world false here. It says nothing in it stands apart from what he is. Because of that, he lives as events bring him. Then comes the question: who has the ability to restrain him? The answer the text implies is no one. Restraint needs a handle. A threat works on fear, a bribe on wanting, a rule on the wish to be approved. Ashtavakra says the one who sees everything as Self has no outside to fear and nothing missing to crave, so those handles are gone. Janaka has just spoken his wonder at waking, and Ashtavakra is testing it by naming what it looks like when it is complete. The verse asks the listener to see what binds a person: it is craving and fear, not other people.
A river pebble worn perfectly smooth sits in the palm and slides out of any grip. A rough stone can be held by its edges. Fear and craving are the edges on a person, the places others take hold. The one who knows the Self as everything has none.
1. Today, pick one moment when someone's disapproval or a small threat pulls at you, such as a frown, a deadline, or a remark. 2. Before answering, take three slow breaths and ask what exactly is gripping you: fear of loss, or wish for praise. 3. Name it silently in one word, then answer plainly. 4. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling whether the grip loosened once it had a name.
A retired woman sits at a family gathering while relatives tell her how she should spend her years: move in with her son, give up the allotment, stop travelling alone. Each voice finds a hook in her, the fear of seeming selfish or the wish to be thought sensible. The text would have her look at the hooks first. She notices the sting in her chest and sees that it is the pull of wanting approval. Then she answers warmly and without defending herself, and she decides from what is in front of her, not from what will keep the room pleased. Ordinary experience agrees that pressure grips hardest when we are tired and anxious to be liked. The verse does not promise that the sting vanishes or that relatives fall silent. It speaks of one who has fully known the Self, not of someone beginning. It gives no licence to ignore a doctor's advice or to harm anyone, and a person who is unwell should still seek care.
