Untouched Like the Sky
Ashtavakra Gita 4.3
Meaning · English
In the one who knows That, merit and sin never touch the inner self. Smoke may seem to meet the sky, and yet the sky has no joining with smoke at all.
Three words carry the teaching. Punya is merit, the good deed and what it is said to earn. Papa is sin, the harmful deed and what it is said to cost. Akasha is sky, or open space, the room in which everything else happens. The third word is the one the verse leans on. Ashtavakra says that inside the knower, the self is never touched by merit or by sin. Good and bad deeds happen, and the body, the mind and the speech go on acting. But the self is not what acts, so nothing lands on it. Then the comparison. Smoke rises, thickens and spreads across the sky. It looks as if the two are joined. Yet when the smoke thins and goes, the sky is exactly as it was. The word sangati means a real joining, a meeting that changes both sides. The sky has none with smoke. The seeming is only seeing, and the text says so in the words "though it is seen". Why teach this to Janaka now? He has just spoken his wonder at waking. Ashtavakra tests it by naming what a free person cannot be stained by. The question behind it is whether the self stays burdened by what was done. The text's answer is no, for the one who knows. It asks the listener to find what in them is the sky and what is the smoke.
A film plays on a cinema screen, and a house burns in it, flames and black smoke filling the frame. The film ends and the screen is white and whole, not even warm. The knower's self is the screen, and merit and sin are the burning house on it.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall one thing you did that you regret, or one thing you are proud of. 2. Notice that it is a picture passing through, with a beginning and an end, and that the one watching it stays the same. 3. Ask quietly: what in me was here before this memory arrived, and is still here now it is going? 4. Do not argue with the memory. Just watch it thin out like smoke, and then sleep.
A retired bus conductor lies awake at night. He has remembered a small lie he told thirty years ago, and it has come back as sharp as the day he told it. He turns over, and the memory turns with him. He judges himself, rehearses the excuse and judges again. The verse offers him a different footing. First, the memory is seen as something that arrives and can be looked at, like smoke crossing the sky. Next, the one looking is noticed. Ashtavakra's teaching is that this looker is the self, and that merit and sin do not reach it. Then the memory is left to thin out without a verdict being passed on the whole of him. If the lie harmed someone, an honest apology the next morning is still an ordinary and good thing to do. Ordinary experience confirms that guilt replays loudest in the dark, when we are tired and there is nothing else to look at. The verse does not promise that regret will vanish, or that wrongs need no repair. It does not replace a doctor if sleeplessness or low mood goes on for weeks. It speaks of what the text says is untouched underneath.
