The Knower at Play
Ashtavakra Gita 4.1
Meaning · English
The steady one who knows the Self moves through life's pleasures as if in a game. He is not the same as the deluded, who haul the load of worldly existence. There is a place that Indra and all the gods reach for, poor and wanting. The yogi who stands in that place feels no gladness at it.
Three words carry the verse. Atmajnana is knowing the Self: atma, the Self, and jnana, knowing. Dhira is the steady one, from the sense of holding firm. Lila is play, activity done for its own sake and not to get somewhere. Ashtavakra says the steady knower enjoys life the way a player enjoys a game. He takes part fully, but nothing hangs on the result. The text sets him against the ones it calls deluded, who are samsara-vahika, carriers of samsara. Samsara is the round of striving and worry, and they carry it like a load on the back. The two may do the same work. They are not the same, because one is carrying and the other is playing. Then the verse looks upward. Indra and all the gods are described as poor and wanting, reaching for a state. The knower already stands in it. Having it, he feels no elation, since elation belongs to someone who has just got what he lacked. Ashtavakra is answering Janaka's wonder here. He shows that arrival leaves the knower unmoved, because the Self was never absent and nothing was added.
On a crowded beach, adults quarrel over deck chairs and guard their bags. A child sits in the sand building a castle, quite happy, with the same sea and the same sun. The child is the knower at play. The quarrelling adults are the carriers, who treat the day as something to win.
1. Tonight, pick one ordinary job, such as washing dishes or folding clothes, and give it ten minutes. Do it as a game with no prize for finishing. 2. Notice when you start carrying it like a load. Check your shoulders and jaw. 3. When good news comes today, notice the lift. Watch it rise and fade without holding on.
A mother stands at her son's school sports day. Other parents jostle for the front rail and shout at the starter. Her own chest is tight, because she wants him to win. Ashtavakra's picture would change this moment in small steps. First she would notice the tightness and see that it comes from treating the race as a load she must carry to the finish. Then she could let the race be a race, with a boy running and a crowd cheering. She would still care for him and still clap. But her day would no longer depend on the result, and a win would bring pleasure without a great lift, and a loss without a collapse. Ordinary experience agrees that gripping an outcome tires the body, and that play goes better when it is not held so tight. The text teaches more than this. It speaks of one who knows the Self and stands where even the gods only reach. The verse does not promise that she will feel no disappointment if he falls, or that grief and worry will not come.
