Becoming and ceasing, every alteration, comes from nature itself. One who is certain of this stands free of change, rid of distress, and comes to rest with ease. God is the maker of all things; no one else makes anything here. One who is certain of this has every hope melt away within, grows quiet, and clings to nothing anywhere.

Ashtavakra gives two certainties, and each brings a different relief. The first word to know is svabhava, nature, literally one's own way of becoming. Things arise and pass because that is their nature: the body ages, moods turn, fortunes rise and fall. Ashtavakra says the one who is sure of this becomes nirvikara. Vikara means alteration, so the word means untouched by the changes, and the distress that comes with them falls away. Rest then comes easily, because nothing is being held in place. The second certainty names Ishvara, the Lord, from a root meaning to rule, as the maker of everything. No one else makes anything here. That includes the person who believed he was the maker. The last word is asha, hope or craving, the reaching toward what is not yet here. The text says it melts from within. Craving needs a doer who thinks he must produce the result. Once the making belongs to nature and to God, the reaching has no footing. What is left is shanta, quiet, attached nowhere. Janaka had asked how dispassion is won. Ashtavakra's answer is that it is not won by effort. It follows from being certain about who does the making. The verse asks the listener for that certainty, held as one's settled view, not as a mood.

A farmer sows his wheat, then sleeps. Through the night the grain fills, the stalks yellow, and the ears bend, with no help from his worry. Change arrives by the field's own nature, not by his pulling. In the same way, the world's becoming and ceasing goes on by nature, and the anxious reaching adds nothing to it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a cup of tea and name three things that changed today without your doing: the light, your tiredness, the weather. 2. The next time you catch yourself wanting a result badly, say quietly: this ripens in its own nature. 3. Then do the next plain task in front of you, and notice whether the wanting loosens in your jaw or chest.

A man stands on a railway platform two hours before an interview in another city. The train is late. He checks the board every minute, his jaw is tight, and he rehearses answers he already knows. Ashtavakra's teaching changes the moment step by step. First, the delay is seen as the way things come about, made by nature and not by him. Second, the preparing is done, and the outcome was never his to manufacture. Third, the hope that had been clutching at the board loosens, and he can sit, drink water and watch the platform. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: repeated checking adds tiredness and not a single minute to the train. The teaching does not promise the train will arrive in time, or that a refusal at the interview would not hurt. It does not remove loss or disappointment, and it does not replace a doctor for anxiety that has grown heavy. What it offers is a different footing while the waiting goes on.
