Meaning · English
One who is certain that misfortune and good fortune come in their time by fate alone is content, his senses settled in himself. He neither longs nor grieves, always. One who is certain that pleasure and pain, birth and death come by fate alone sees nothing left to be achieved and is free of strain. Even while he acts, he is not stained.
Three words carry the verse. Daiva is fate, what is apportioned and not chosen. Niscayi is one who is certain, whose mind has settled the question instead of holding it open. Lipyate means to be smeared or stained, from the sense of daubing on a coating. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the certain one sees loss and gain, pleasure and pain, even birth and death, as arriving in their own season by fate. Because he is sure of this, he is full. His senses rest in himself and do not run out after things. Longing and grief both need a belief that outcomes are mine to secure. Without that belief, neither has anything to hold. He sees nothing left that must be accomplished, so his effort has no strain in it. The last line is the point. He still acts. But action stains through the clinging to results behind it, and with that clinging gone the deed leaves no mark. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. The answer is that it is recognised, and the sign is action with no smear on it. The verse asks the listener to look for the belief underneath wanting and sorrow: that the outcome is theirs to grasp.
A postman walks his round carrying wedding cards, hospital bills and telegrams of loss. He hands each one over at the door and walks on, his hands clean. The letters are the changing events, and the postman is the knower who carries them without being marked.
1. Tonight, write down one thing that happened today that you did not choose: a delay, a kind word, a bill. 2. Beside it, write what you did about it, the part that was yours. 3. Tomorrow, do one task fully for five minutes, then stop and notice whether you are already reaching for how it will turn out. 4. When you catch the reaching, name it quietly and return to the task.
A shopkeeper pulls up the shutter on the morning the rent is due. The takings are unknown, and his chest is tight with sums. The verse would change the moment in steps. He sorts what is his to do: open on time, greet the first customer, keep the shelves full. He sees that the day's sales arrive by their own season and are not his to command. Longing for a good day and dread of a bad one both loosen their grip on his hands. He serves the first customer with his attention on her and not on the till. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy with outcomes serves the person in front of it poorly. The text teaches that this settledness is the mark of the knower, whose action leaves no stain. It does not promise the rent will be paid. It does not remove worry on a hard day, and money trouble that persists calls for practical help from people who can give it.
