Whoever knows that highest Brahman becomes Brahman. No one in his family is born without that knowledge. He crosses over sorrow, crosses over wrong, is freed from the knots of the hidden heart, and becomes deathless.

Brahman is the Upanishads' word for the one reality underneath everything, the highest thing there is to know. Angiras tells Saunaka that knowing it is not like knowing a fact about a distant country. The knower becomes it. Shankara reads this as the end of ignorance, not a change into something new: what the knower is was always Brahman, and only the mistaken view fell away. Three more words carry the rest. Shoka is grief, the ache of loss and fear. Granthi is a knot, and here the knots are tied in the hidden place of the heart, the tight holds of wanting and clinging. Amrita is deathless, literally not-dying. Angiras says the knower crosses over grief and over wrong, is loosed from those knots, and so is deathless. The line about the family says the knowledge does not stop with one person. Those who come after him are not left in ignorance of Brahman. Angiras gives the reason by the order of the claims. Grief and wrong grow from the knots, and the knots hold because the self is mistaken for something smaller. When that mistake ends, they have nothing to hold on to. The listener is asked to treat this knowing as the one that matters, since every sorrow named here depends on its absence.

A child wakes in the dark and sees a figure standing in the corner. Her heart pounds. Then the light comes on and it is only a coat on a hook. The fear did not need fighting, only seeing. Grief and clinging are the figure in the corner, and knowing Brahman is the light.

1. Tonight, sit for five quiet minutes and name one sorrow or grudge you keep carrying. Say it plainly, in a single sentence. 2. Ask what you are taking yourself to be inside it: a son, a loser, someone wronged. Write that word down. 3. Read the verse slowly aloud once, and notice whether the grip in your chest or jaw loosens even a little. 4. Repeat for a few evenings this week, using a different sorrow each time.

A man sits in his parked car outside his brother's house, engine off, hand still on the key. They have not spoken properly in ten years. His chest is tight and his jaw is set, and he is rehearsing his side of the quarrel. The Mundaka's teaching, as Angiras gives it, says such knots are tied in the heart and loosen through knowing. For this man that begins with seeing what he is holding. He notices the tight chest and names it as a knot, not as the whole of himself. He asks who is clinging: the elder brother, the one who was wronged, the one who was right. Each of those is a smaller account of who he is, and the teaching says the knot lives in that smaller account. Seeing this does not settle the argument. It makes the next minute less crowded, and he may walk to the door with a looser jaw. Ordinary experience confirms that a long-held grievance sits in the body as tension. The verse does not promise that the brother will answer kindly, that the years will be given back, or that grief will vanish. Illness, loss and the need for a doctor remain what they are.
