Meaning · English
A Rik verse declares it: this knowledge of Brahman should be told only to those who do their duties, know the scriptures, rest in Brahman, offer the one seer's fire with faith, and have rightly kept the vow of the head.
Three words carry the verse. Kriyavantah means people who keep up their actions: kriya is action, and these are people who do what is theirs to do. Shrotriya is one learned in the Veda, from shruti, what is heard and handed down. Brahmanishtha joins Brahman, the vast reality the Upanishad is about, with nishtha, standing firm. Angiras quotes an older Rik verse to Saunaka and says the teaching of Brahman belongs to people with these marks. They act, they have studied, and they are steady in Brahman. They also offer the fire called the one seer, with faith, and they have kept the vow of the head, a vow the Atharva tradition prescribes. The reason is practical. This knowledge asks for a settled mind, and a mind is settled by duty, study and faith kept over time. Without them the words are heard and not held. Shankara reads the one seer as Agni, and reads the Brahman in brahmanishtha as the lower Brahman, worship with form, so the listener already has a firm footing before the highest is taught. He reads the vow of the head as a rite of carrying fire on the head. The verse asks the listener to see whether the ground is ready.
A new clay pot is baked in a fire before anyone pours water into it. Unbaked clay would soften and give way. In the verse, duty, study, faith and vows are the firing, and the teaching of Brahman is the water the pot must be able to hold.
1. Choose one duty you have been putting off, such as a call, a bill or a chore, and finish it today. 2. Read one page of a text you respect, slowly, for ten minutes, at the same hour each day this week. 3. Before you read, sit quietly for one minute and notice whether your mind is ready or hurried. 4. At the week's end, notice whether the reading settled you more than it did on the first day.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, his father in surgery. He has been told to wait. He picks up his phone and cannot read anything. His mind keeps jumping. A friend gives him a book of deep teachings, and the words slide past. The verse speaks to this. It says the teaching of Brahman is for those whose lives have been steadied by duty, study and faith. The man can take one small step from it. He can stop trying to grasp something large tonight and do the next plain thing: drink water, call his sister, write down what the doctor said. Steadiness comes from small acts done again and again. Ordinary experience agrees that a settled mind takes in more than a scattered one. The verse does not promise that this will calm his fear, change the surgery's outcome, or replace the doctors. Nor does it measure him against others. It says the teaching is for those who are ready, and readiness is built slowly.
