Because those who remember are of the same kind as those who follow the Veda, remembered tradition can serve as a valid means of knowing, by inference. Where it conflicts with the Veda, it is set aside; inference holds only without conflict.
Much of what people actually do, such as customs and household rules, is written in remembered texts called smriti, not in the Veda itself. So why should those texts bind anyone? Jaimini answers that smriti counts as a pramana, a means of valid knowledge, but only on a condition. His reason is that its authors are of the same kind as those who live by the Veda: the same community, doing the same duties. From this we infer (anumana) that their rules rest on a Vedic passage, even one we cannot now point to. Shabara is well known to read the sutra this way. Then comes the limit. If a remembered rule contradicts the Veda, it is disregarded, because the inference only works when nothing clashes. A contradiction removes the very ground for assuming a Vedic source. Tradition therefore borrows its authority; the Veda is the root, and smriti stands only while it agrees.
A family recipe card, copied out by an aunt who cooked from the old cookbook every day. You trust it, assuming the cookbook says the same. But if the card gives an oven temperature the cookbook plainly contradicts, you drop the card. The card is trusted by inference from its source, and a clash with that source cancels the trust.
Epistemology treats this as testimony plus a defeater. We accept what reliable people pass on, and we drop it when a better source contradicts it. Jaimini's step, inferring an unseen source from the reliability of the people who handed it down, resembles inference to the best explanation. Where it holds up is the idea that trust in tradition should be conditional. Where it strains is that a lost source cannot be checked, so the inference is hard to test, and historians usually explain customs by social change rather than hidden texts. Beside deontology, it asks where duty gets its authority. Mimamsa answers with a text, not with reason or consequence. Whether that text has no author is something Nyaya and Vaisheshika reject.
