Praise Serves the Command

Mimamsa Sutras 1.2.7

Meaning · English

Because praise and the injunction form one sentence together, the passages of praise exist for the sake of the injunctions: they stand with the command as its supporting part, not as separate statements.

The question: much of the Veda is not command at all. It praises, tells stories, describes. If the Veda's purpose is to direct action toward dharma (duty, what ought to be done), what are those passages doing? Jaimini's answer rests on one word, ekavakyatva, being a single sentence. A praise passage and the injunction (vidhi, the command) it sits beside are read as one unit of meaning, not two. The praise is stuti, and its role is arthavada, a supporting statement. Shabara, the classic commentator, is well known to explain it this way: praising a rite makes the hearer value it and take it up. So a praise of an offering is not a report about the world. It is part of the push toward doing. Nothing in the text is idle, because each statement is tied to the command it serves.

A recipe book opens a dish with a paragraph about how a grandmother loved it and how guests always asked for more. The paragraph is not the instructions. Yet it belongs to the recipe, because it makes you want to cook it. Praise in the Veda maps to that paragraph, and the injunction to the steps.

Philosophy of language gives a close parallel. Speech act theory notes that a sentence can do more than describe: it can command, persuade or urge. Reading a story as working on the listener's will, not only informing, is a fair observation, and rhetoric studies agree that narrative motivates action. Mimamsa's further claim is stronger and more contested: that all of a text's content is subordinate to its commands. Linguists would say that texts mix purposes, and many stories simply describe, console or entertain. Deontology, the ethics centred on duty, resembles Mimamsa's focus on what ought to be done, but it does not usually insist that every sentence in a moral tradition be read as serving a rule. Whether a whole scripture has one function remains an interpretive choice, not a settled finding.
