Named for Teachers

Mimamsa Sutras 1.1.30

Meaning · English

The names attached to Vedic texts come from teaching: each person named is the one who recited and passed on that branch.

The question behind this sutra is an objection. Some Vedic branches carry personal names, such as Kathaka. Surely a text named after a man was written by him? Mimamsa holds that the Veda has no author at all, so Jaimini must explain these names another way. His answer is pravacana, meaning expounding or teaching. A branch is called by a teacher's name because he recited it, taught it and kept it alive in his school, not because he composed it. Shabara, the classic commentator, reads the names in this way. The reasoning is that a name only shows some link between a person and a text. Composing is one such link, and handing on is another. Since the school has independent grounds for thinking the Veda was never composed, the link must be the second one. What follows is that the names do not threaten the claim of an authorless Veda. They record lineage, the chain of teachers, and say nothing about origin.

Think of a family recipe known as Aunt Meera's pickle. Meera did not invent pickling or this exact taste. She is simply the one who made it, taught it to the next cousins and kept it going. Her name labels the line it travelled through. In the same way, a teacher's name on a Vedic branch labels who passed it on.

Textual scholars today also separate a name on a text from the act of composing it. Named recensions and schools often mark transmitters, and oral traditions are known for careful handing down, so the Mimamsa reading of these names as teaching lineages is plausible. The larger claim is different. Mainstream historical scholarship treats the Vedic hymns as composed by human poets in a particular period, so it does not support a text with no author. That claim is philosophical and cannot be tested by evidence. Nyaya and Vaisheshika reject it, holding that the Veda has an author, a supreme person. The sutra's real contribution is a distinction every reader of old texts still needs: a name can point to origin, or to custody.
