Meaning · English

Where is the doer, where the enjoyer? Where is the actionless flicker of awareness? Where is any fruit seen directly? For me, who am without a nature of my own, always.

Janaka takes the commonest facts of life and asks where each one sits in the self. Kartā is the doer, from the root kṛ, to do. Bhoktā is the enjoyer, from bhuj, to eat or experience. Sphuraṇa is a quiver or flicker, from sphur, to throb. Aparokṣa means direct, literally 'not out of the eye's reach'. Phala is fruit, the result of an act. Svabhāva is own-nature, a fixed character of one's own, and niḥsvabhāva means without it. First he says the one who acts and the one who tastes the result cannot be found in him. Next, even the faint stir of awareness that seems to come before an act, the flicker that has no action in it, is not a thing he can point to. Then the fruit: even a result that seems plainly in hand belongs to no one. The reason he gives is the last phrase. The self has no shape, trait or role of its own, so nothing can be fastened to it. Doing, enjoying and gaining all need someone with a character. Ashtavakra has taught that the self is the witness. A witness takes no part in what it sees. Janaka now speaks as that witness, and for him the questions of how to act and what to gain have lost their ground.

A window pane in a busy kitchen. Steam rises, people cook, eat, argue, and all of it is seen through the glass. The pane cooks nothing, tastes nothing, keeps no profit, and has no colour to give the scene. The self, in the verse, is that pane: everything shows in it, and none of it is its own doing.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it five minutes. 2. Partway through, notice the thought 'I am doing this' and see that it arrives after the hands have already been moving. 3. At your next meal, take the first three mouthfuls slowly. Notice that 'I enjoyed that' is a thought which comes after the taste. 4. Each time, simply notice what is aware of the thought itself. Do not argue with it.

A cook is washing up at midnight after a wedding feast. Guests have praised the food, and she feels a small pull: I made that. Her feet ache and she wants the credit. The verse speaks to this moment. Janaka says the doer and the enjoyer cannot be found in the self. Taken step by step: the praise arrives, the thought 'I did it' attaches itself to the evening's work, and a second thought, 'I was admired', attaches itself to the praise. Someone is aware of both thoughts and is neither of them. That awareness took no bow and is owed no fruit. Ordinary experience agrees in one small way: in absorbed work the sense of 'I am doing this' often drops away, and it returns when someone speaks of the result. Janaka's teaching goes further and says there never was a doer in the self. The verse does not take the ache from her feet, the grief of a hard year, or the need to be paid for her work, and it does not replace a doctor or any practical care.
