Nature Folds Back
Yoga Sutras 4.34
Meaning · English
Aloneness is the three potencies of nature flowing backward to their source, now emptied of any purpose for the seer. Or it is the power of pure consciousness standing in its own form.
Four terms carry the sutra. Guna is a strand of nature; there are three, and together they make up mind and matter. Pratiprasava is a flowing back: prasava is a bringing forth, and prati reverses it. Kaivalya comes from kevala, meaning only or alone. Citi-shakti is the power of consciousness, the seer itself. Svarupa is its own form. The sutra gives two descriptions of one state. Seen from nature's side, the strands have no purpose left to serve for the seer, so they return to where they came from. Seen from the seer's side, consciousness rests in its own form, with nothing laid over it. Aloneness here means consciousness standing apart from what it watched. It does not mean emptiness or loss. Patanjali says this because the whole book asks what the long work of yoga is for. The previous sutra says nature's changes were purposeful and have now run their course. This sutra names what remains once that purpose is complete. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the first half as the strands, their work finished, dissolving into their cause and not arising again for that seer. He reads the second half as consciousness established in itself. The commentators generally take the two halves as one aloneness described from two sides.
A knitted sweater is pulled by one loose end and unravels into a ball of wool. The wool is not destroyed, but it is no longer a garment for anyone to wear. Nature's strands, undone, go back to their source and serve no one, while the one who wore them was never knitted into them.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes with no screen and no task. Notice what is happening in your mind without joining in. 2. Pick one thing you did today only from habit, such as checking a phone or tidying a shelf. Ask whether it still serves any purpose, and just observe the answer. 3. Once this week, notice the one who is noticing. Do not try to describe it. Only see that the watching is separate from what is watched.
